@diegosismologo.bsky.social
Director of the Cascadia Region Earthquake Science Center (@cascadiaeqs.bsky.social) and Associate Professor of geophysics at University of Oregon. I research big earthquakes and tsunamis.
On July 29, 2025 a Mw 8.8 earthquake off Kamchatka launched a Pacific-wide tsunami, right as the SWOT satellite flew south-to-north taking altimetry measurements of the wave train. In our new preprint, we pair SWOT with nearby DART buoys to capture the tsunami’s propagation and its source

Discussing tsunamis at @omsiedu.bsky.social last night was great fun. Definitely the biggest screen I've ever presented on!

Video is almost certainly real. From colleagues in Russia:

But danger persisted. In 1952, another massive quake (M9) in Kamchatka again sent a tsunami across the Pacific. Hawaii was struck with waves as large as 9 m. Warning systems were still very limited—underscoring the urgent need for better forecasting and communication

Or not, seismology is hard :)

Station NPW is ~250 km from the hypocenter. For that acceleration pulse to get to the site when it does rupture needs to be trucking along at ~5 km/s. Shear wave speeds at ~10km depth according to Litho1.0 are 3.46 km/s. The rupture is most likely, realy really, supreshear.

This is the Network of the Americas (NOTA). Upwards of 1000 high quality GPS stations used to monitor all big active faults that produce the biggest most damaging earthquakes as well as volcanoes from Mt. St. Helens to Yellowstone, etc. Every single on of them is grant funded.

@washingtonpost.com! is this the peak for tsunami mud collectors?

Congrats to
@diatomdura.bsky.social and team, fantastic level of exposure and attention to a super important problem

No tsunami threat friends, straight from the warning centers...

First public alert in Oregon I believe for ShakeAlert! Alerted in Eugene, OR through Android.

Earthquake hazards of the PNW. Damage to buildings is likely at MMI>6 – that's every major city, yikes. Note the discontinuity at the CAN/US border due to different methodologies used by each countries agencies. The tsunami estimates are for a scenario used by OR for evacuation maps, scary stuff!
