Checkmate in Berlin by Giles Milton.

I enjoy every Giles Milton book this one is on another level. Fascinating and peopled by amazing characters I found it brilliant. Reading it in the current climate of Russian brutality in Ukraine and the duplicity of Trump sadly shows how little has changed.

Just a shout out for the Empire Podcast. Always fascinating for anyone wanting some history you were never taught. The current focus on Canada/USA is a real test for its exploration of moral duplicity and shades of grey on all sides.

There is a group just for her work on FB. Here is one of her more ‘naturalistic’ pieces.

Important day for me today, a reading streak of 365 days without interruption - 97 books completed in that time. Part of my ‘secret’ is not watching any TV.

Death at the sign of the Rook: Kate Atkinson.

Absolutely brilliant. Layer upon layer of plotting, intricate detailing and laced with lovely literary humour. One of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time.

Just finished Fatal Legacy by Lindsey Davis. Penultimate book of her Flavia Alba series. As always wonderfully immersive in Roman life whilst brining its echoes to our time. Bewildering cast of interrelated characters but the denouement is great.

Review of Deep Harbour - Tove Alsterdal (audiobook) The third in the series should have stopped at number 2. I very quickly got tired of details of pregnancy and warm chests etc. I cannot understand how an audio performance can veer from clever vocalisation of characters to robotic utterance. 💙📚

Absolute diva. Only pedigree cat we have ever had, all the rest rescues over 40+ years

Well done I am on book 90 but set myself the goal of 52 so am ok with that.

Another I would recommend is anything from Lindsey Davies, either the Falco series or his adopted daughter the Flavia Albia series. Both have borrowings of wisecracking private detectives from the 1930s but are set in Rome. Very readable and very entertaining.

If you are up for some history and amazing period detail I heartily recommend the ‘Mark’ series. Tudor intrigue with great characters and very immersive. With lots to actually parallel our current times.

To illustrate the breadth, this is my non fiction consumption this year…. And that’s just my interest areas.

My October reads on Storygraph. A mix of light fiction, heavier fiction, and some very heavy non fiction. Booksky 💙📚

Currently listening to this, having read many of the Lyndsey Davis’ novels set in Rome I thought I needed to make some sense of the background. #booksky

Ok I have just joined here, been hanging out on Mastodon since leaving space Karens place when he bought it. Will take time to develop a presence here but this is a start. I have set myself a goal of reading every day this year. Currently managing to keep the streak going. Data from Storygraph.
