@dicecompany.bsky.social is an intricate story with a "group of friends who weave tales of triumph, heoism, and despair under the guise of playing Dungeons and Dragons." The community that has built up around them is also amazing. Supportive, loving and wildly creative in their own right.

1) Find an interesting conflict within the campaign premise to lean into. (INTERESTING, not 'will make everyone else miserable')
2) Make someone who works in a fun-for-everyone way with the rest of the group.
3) Make someone who has some sort of ability/power/skill that delights you.

One of the characters I statted for my comic fantasy setting is an in-house cleric for the local Thieves' Guild, Vinnie the Whisper.

I would absolutely endorse someone playing a kleptomaniac because they want to over playing a healer because they need to. But I guess they could always compromise and make a kleptomaniac healer!

I always start with a concept, like "a kenku rogue would be fun to play." Then I add just a little backstory, some hooks the DM can plug in later that make me feel immersed and connected. Also I can apparently only make OCs with 4-5 letter names that start with F

Connect yourself to the world. Have people and places that matter to your character. And yes, those people do need to be alive and unkidnapped.

100% this. Very often I see players ask "what role does the party need me to fill?" when they should be asking "what would be fun and interesting to play?" Sure, you can make A Tank™️ but that's not exactly an interesting starting point.

1. Think about the setting. It doesn't always have to be dragons or dungeons. Most GM's won't let you play as a dungeon anyway. 😜

2. Pick an Archetype from that setting. Old West? Gunslinger or Outlaw. Sci-fi? Space Ranger or Merc. Etc.

3. Find something weird/unique about them and get wacky. 😉

Steal them from films and tv shows. That guy who's after the magic artifact? He's Kasper Gutman from The Maltese Falcon. His henchmen are Kai-ro and Willmer, etc.

Just don't steal from Star Wars. For some reason, players see right though that... 🤔
