Finished spread! The lives of different types of stars, the various ways they give back all they had taken in changed, and the new forms they give rise to! This took me some time to say the least! It's a lively place out there! On to the next spread (finale of this chapter!!)

a spread for a comics page, black background, with white panel borders and most the drawings white on black. upper left of the spread, a swirl of the start of a star - emanating out from it in radiating arms, a number of different paths in brick-like interconnected panel border shapes. First radiating down and to the left the life of a brown dwarf - which never quite becomes a start. the next branch goes mostly down - a red dwarf which burns longer than the current life of the universe, but the path forks near the bottom, because some of these alternately flare up during their life. the next path is a dwarf star - much like our own - which is stable until it puffs up late in its life, then burst off much of its material to become a white dwarf. Here the path forks - in one branch it lives on as a white dwarf and nebula, in the other, when it has a partner star, it steals material from it and eventually becomes a type 1A supernova. Overlaid a bit on this set of paths and the red dwarf is an example of a binary star system and a six star system. Emanating from the middle of these paths from upper left and going across the spine of the book to the lower right, is a path filled with galaxies - the path loses its border in the middle showing a collection of galaxies. Upper right path is a blue super giant as we move right it goes nova becoming in one forking path a black hole, in another a spinning neutron star - and that forks to either continue or if paired, collide to go supernova and create heavy elements. Middle of right side, molecules formed by chemistry with these atoms forged in stars. new swirls form, and then we see another generation of stars in a grid set of panels and the Planets! formed around them. This is a generational cycle and the text reflects that

Last year, PSU's Comic Studies program hosted two panels at Rose City Comic Con. We are excited to announce that the Comic Studies program will be returning to this year's RCCC with two more panels!
Portland State University's Comics Studies program will be returning to Rose City Comic Con! Last year, PSU's Comic Studies program hosted two panels at Rose City Comic Con. We are excited to announce that the Comic Studies program will be returning to this year's RCCC with two more panels! • An Education in Comics will be held on Saturday, September 6th, from 12:15 - 1:00 p.m. in room E145-146. This roundtable will focus on comics in the university, featuring instructors from Portland State University, including Brian Michael Bendis, Jon Holt, Diana Schutz, David Walker, Douglas Wolk, and Susan Kirtley, as well as comics theorist Scott McCloud, who will examine the role comic art plays in the academy and discuss opportunities for students interested in studying the medium in colleges and universities. • A Comics Education: Studying Comics in College will be held on Sunday, September 7th, from 3:45 - 4:30 p.m. in room E145-146. This roundtable will showcase the perspectives of current and graduated students who study comics, offering time for them to share what they’ve learned by creating and studying comics as part of Portland State University’s Comics Studies Certificate program. For students, teachers, and fans, this can’t miss panel will showcase comics in action as tools for learning. RCCC is located at the Oregon Convention Center with the following hours: • Friday, September 5, 2025 - 1 PM to 8 PM (programming until 10:00 PM) • Saturday, September 6, 2025 - 10 AM to 7 PM (programming until 10:00 PM) • Sunday, September 7, 2025 - 10 AM to 5 PM The full programming schedule is available now on the Rose City Comic Con website and mobile app. The program features a ton of comics-related panels!

Introducing the creator of the Comics Studies program - Susan Kirtley!
Susan Kirtley (she/her) is a professor at Portland State University and the creator of the PSU Comics Studies program. She is the author of the Eisner-winning “Lynda Barry: Girlhood through the Looking Glass” (2013), and co-editor of “With Great Power Comes Great Pedagogy: Teaching, Learning, and Comics” (2020). Her book, “Typical Girls: The Rhetoric of Womanhood in Comic Strips” was the 2022 Charles Hatfield Prizewinner for the best book in Comics Studies. She is currently the Editor of “Inks: The Journal of the Comics Studies Society.”

J.J. Vazquez is a professor at Portland State University. He's the associate director of the PSU Film and PSU Comics Studies programs, curating cool events for both departments. Comics Confluence Festival Panelist Announcement - Andréa Gilroy!
Andréa Gilroy will be joining David Walker and Sean Edgar for the Publishing & Marketing Comics panel from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. on May 17.
Books with Pictures in Eugene is independent and locally operated by Andréa Gilroy, who earned her PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Oregon (UO) in 2015. Her dissertation focused on comics history and the way comics represent identity. After graduation, she has worked as a comics educator teaching courses at UO (including acting as 2016-17 Interim Director of the UO Comics & Cartoon Studies Program) and PSU, serving on the board of ICAF, co-curating cool exhibits, and speaking at conferences and conventions. She also made Comics Crash Course. She is thrilled to build a space that uses the power of comics and the passion of fans to build community.

Diana Schutz is an award-winning comic editor who edited some of Will Eisner’s work while at Dark Horse Comics. She has also edited iconic series such as “Sin City,” “Usagi Yojimbo,” and “American Splendor.” Schutz was the first woman to be inducted into the Canadian Comic Book Creator Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2023.
