had never noticed this in the pro-shot pictures but there were very clearly two figures drawn on the canvas of “Present and Past” that de Chirico painted over, which is really cool to see and a reminder that there really is no replacement for seeing the work in person

Today’s mail, courtesy of Mexico City’s Máquina de Aplausos — a collection of Seth’s writing on comics, plus a fun repro of an excerpt from GREAT NORTHERN BROTHERHOOD OF CANADIAN CARTOONISTS. (Seth made a tiny gumball comic to go with it but my package came torn — must’ve fallen out. Womp womp!)

Loved FLEA by @forever4pm.bsky.social (@fieldmouse.press, 2025). In a way the inverse of another recent favorite, Kayla E.’s PRECIOUS RUBBISH—autobio less concerned with the events than with the prism they are depicted through—but taken in a casual, spontaneous direction that works beautifully.

the DC Finest books also have that sort of “uniformity over personality” thing going on, but at least the font sizing here is big and logical enough. both bombast and clarity. the amount of dead space in the Marvel trade dress is ugly as sin

There’s a couple. Usually a case of “Newer translation is better but the older has a nicer cover.” THE MASTER AND MARGARITA, THE PLAGUE (Camus). I also think I have two copies of Auster’s NEW YORK TRILOGY because the copy with the Spiegelman cover is a bit beat up (found it on the street).
