i was approaching it from "i was born this way" rather than "this is merely a right wing talking point" like trying to explain why we are how we are. who cares why? we just are.

the key difference here is if they are a fascist, they know exactly what they are about and what they believe and they know exactly what they are saying (which sometimes they do masquerade as average uninformed republicans to their advantage with the dogwhistles), but in the wise words of my friend:

notice i said ignorant, not stupid. you might find that conservatives agree with you on more points than you think, they are just lacking in the information. and in my experience, if you are willing to expend the emotional labor with either one, it usually A. shuts them down and B. gets them thinkin

this is kind of diverging from the original point of the post— thankfully no one has said those exact words to me, "you don't look sick", but similarly what stands out to my mind is when someone told me "you don't seem bipolar" and i said yeah cuz i isolate when i'm in an episode 💀

like my neurodivergent ass can only maintain so much focus and dedication to things before the whole thing collapses in on itself and i'm back to square one

family/friends mean well but remarks like "well why don't you just do this thing" like go back to the gym are tiring because i'm already mentally exhausted from taxing myself to work overtime and do other healthy habits. i know the gym helps but my job is also physically demanding

i love this so much because it is so exhausting being nice when people just keep conveniently forgetting you have a disability (or multiple)
