Visited our daughter down in CalPoly-SLO and had the chance to do some big and little birding, including some California condors (white-tag 86 & red 27) @PinnaclesNP plus this Curlew and willet combo at Morro Rock. Weather was awesome and included two rattlers

It was great to hear about the history of Old-growth forests in the PNW from Jerry Franklin, and as an added treat, to see past U.S. Representative Peter DeFazio at the NW Scientific Association meeting on the UOregon campus last week. #nwsa #uoregon #peterdefazio #oldgrowth #northwestscientific

New from the Washington Post: "Riveting Storytelling for All of America." It's their new motto, but how much truth in their stories??? I think I will stick with the NY Times. #nytimes #wapo #news #journalism #washingtonpost

For all my Mid-Atlantic ecology and botany peeps, this is a really cool vegetative history of one rare community type in an area loosely near where I used to work. It's a free download from PLoS journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

My two favorite PNW sightings of the last year were of marbled and ancient murrelets, but the photos were bad. So, here's a better photo of something being monitored in Oregon. I hope you like this pika I spotted in Casacade Range back in October.

We have had a lot of rain recently, and it has made hiking a bit more challenging but still rewarding.

I was happy to have done my part at the Mt Pisgah Mushroom Festival recently. I spent the day talking about lichen ecology and how to ID our local species. northwest-lichenologists.wildapricot

Flew over Greenland a few days ago. That was a cool experience. I had the only open shade on the plane. Look what they all missed out on! I am guessing the mountains are flat-topped from glacial/icepack action.
