Red Elm
This is a 5 inch live edge bowl made from Red Elm. The tree fell on a neighbor's roof. It took 2 cranes to lift it off the house. I collected a pile of wood. Then I made a bowl for the owner. Here is one for sale.

I used salvaged wood to make this live edge vase.

Spalted Maple
I made these from the same log. The colors come from a fungus in the wood. Once it is dry the fungus becomes inactive.

Mystery Wood.
Another woodworker had this log, 4 feet long and 5 inches thick. When it split he gave it to me. This is how much was left when I removed the crack. This is 2 inches by 3 inches. #recycledwood #reclaimedwood #salvagewood #woodturning #woodturner #bellinghamwa

Visual effects
I had a hard time cutting this Honey dipper. The wood is spinning at 3200 RPM at the start. I slow down the speed. The wood appears to be going faster, then it looks like it is spinning forward, then backwards. This is just how it looks at different speeds.

Skagit Wood Expo
I will be doing demonstrations at the Wood Expo next weekend. Find me and others at the Northwest Washington Wood Turners booth. There will be saw mills, chainsaw art, wood for sale, vendors, food, a circus, and egg hunt and more. See the flyers for details.

Ready to Sharpen
Before working today, I am taking some time to sharpen some of the tools. Almost all of these tools were picked up second hand from estate sales.

Christmas Tree Forest
Everything is recycled. I use last year's Christmas trees to make small Christmas trees as decorations.

Urn
I made a pencil cup with some mystery wood. A friend asked if I could make a lid. I used walnut and mahogany. I learned to shape the lid so it locks in place. A tap on a certain spot releases the lid to open. #woodturning #art #wood #urn #woodturner #artist #creative #solution #craft

All of my wood is reclaimed; fallen trees, or salvaged. Trees, off-cuts, broken things. Here are some photos showing where it all comes from.

Bell Handle.
A friend needed a handle for her bell. The photos show the finished product, and then some of the work in progress.

Cherry Pot.
The tree came down on Friday. I turned this on Sunday, and stored it in a paper bag to dry for almost 2 years. I sanded and finished with walnut oil.
Notice how the top forms a saddle shape. It is intentional, and there is a risk of cracking with this process.
