The Diplomat is one of the best in the genre, right up there with Slow Horses. She’s the main reason for it.

Now to see what @bretdevereaux.bsky.social thought. I’m pretty sure he wrote about it and I’ve saved it for after my self-imposed auto de fe.

I can feel @ryanmcbeth.bsky.social rolling his eyes so hard. This is one of his hot topics to improve recruitment and retention, along with legalising weed and re-introducing specialist ranks for non-leadership advancement.

It’s funny, just not Comedy Store funny.

Anna Wintour gave her take on “luxury” this week talking to David Remnick @newyorker.com . She thinks it’s meaningless. People like nice things and they afford them if they really want them. Who buys Gucci, Dior, Balenciaga? Normal folks, that’s who.

That’s the kind of thing that led Sarah Paine to say that the WWI conscripts were the original greatest generation, who saw the failures of leadership in a Great War and were determined not to repeat them. I never thought that way until I heard her say it.

Hey, Steve’s doing Michael Pollen but for sport!

It’s about many things.

Bad take. Sport is about more than this. Getting students moving and into team sports has far reaching effects and meets needs - fitness, community, mental health are just a few. Reducing sport to revenue because a handful of students bear a particular burden is robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Or let’s not assume, period. Bibi fits very neatly into your ideology theory but it doesn’t make him wrong for listening to his intel sources on Iran’s nuclear readiness. Even leftist Yossi Halevi says this precisely bc Iran is a more dangerous, untrustworthy external threat than BN’s internal one.

It’s a hopeful piece. There are influential people and leaders who stand up to AI being given the keys to everything. Human effort leads to learning and understanding - essential work in improving everything. Chicago Fed President Austin Goolsby just said this re: monetary policy.

TSA is already privatised in some airports. Contractors like Raytheon wear the blue shirts. Ask them if morale is low or equipment is bust. Meanwhile, hard to see folks bothered about an ill conceived agency that earned its rep for poor service and bully tactics.

We’ll take a pipe full of what the Canadians and Australians are smoking tonight, please.

We’re a bit less sanguine down here in Kent.

Something insidious lies beneath. The part of society that is filled with the disgust of anything perceived as maternal by proponents of toxic masculinity simply recode those elements they need, then reject the rest. Their hypocrisy isn’t just vindictive - it’s essential to their egos and survival.

I want to know when we’re gonna see a game that follows a Separatist squad. We got games for the Principality of Zeon that give a pretty good idea of how that could work.

What we need is transportation policy that makes sense. Not every road needs a cycle route, but every constituency needs transport links that are safe, accessible, and reliable. Privatisation is failing at this in areas like ours.

Wow. That’s really true, isn’t it?

But it would be a mistake to think that is where the story ends.

Conan proved himself through the Tonight Show kerfuffle. He kept his sense of humor and took it head on when other entertainers might try to ignore it or go on the “woe is me” tour. He rallied his mates and went back to work like a winner.
