Daytime temps dropped below freezing about a week ago here in southern Minneosta, so this might be my last find of the season. 😢 It doesn't photograph very well, but to the eye, this 1865 Indian Head penny looks like it was dropped before Grant met Lee at Appomattox.

1868 Shield Nickel found in Dundas, MN. Plus all the trash I dug along the way. You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince.

What's missing on this Indian Head? The shield on the reverse side, which was added to the design a year later. This is a 1st-year (1859) IHP. Even if the date is too roached to read, you can always tell an 1859 by the reverse. I found this at an extinct farmstead in Minnesota.
