His gaze was fixed on the ground, his ears drooping slightly. “It’s Andrea’s fucking—“ “Calm down, Noir. Andrea’s not coming.” Malthus said. “That doesn’t make a…what now?” her gaze flicked to him. “She’s not coming. At least, I don’t think she’ll be around tonight. Hugo’s telling her the truth about now.” “About what? That lying sack of shit has never made anything easy on her. What could he possibly be telling her that wouldn’t be another—“ “He’s telling her the truth, because something big is about to happen, and he doesn’t know if he’s going to survive it. He’s putting Bartamus on the job with her and Susannah. I think he’s putting Roach on it, too.” “B-Bartamus? He’d never—“ “He is.” “What the fuck did he tell him.” “The same thing he’s going over to tell her right now.” Malthus leaned into her ear so that the other guests wouldn’t hear him. In a barely audible whisper, he said: “Lance and Alex are alive.” She stepped back and slapped him. She didn’t mean to. The impulse struck her and her hand flew at him before she knew what she was doing. He rubbed his cheek, but the expression he set on her was severe. Not angry, but solemn. “I’m not lying to you, Noir. I’ve seen the proof. That’s the job. To get one of them back.” “But then…he’s known this whole time and he…” She withered. “Oh, she’s going to be devastated.” “Don’t cancel the dinner. Everyone being here will give her time to process things. We can go to her when its over.” “You know where she’ll be?” She’s fairly predictable. She’s going to go to her shop if I know her. I’ll go with you when we’re done here, okay. We can take the back way.” “Sky Lord’s mercy.” Noir breathed.

These were taken after the George Floyd protests and riots in Minneapolis. This is also the moment I realized legacy media had an agenda, and wouldn't cover events like this in a fair or unbiased way. Please read the alt text for added context.
First, let me get something out of the way. Whatever you may have heard, these riots didn't come out of nowhere. Having been living in Minneapolis until a few months prior to this happening, I had begun to view this as a powder keg waiting to blow. For one thing, Philando Castille's extrajudicial killing happened just over the river in St. Paul a few years prior and Black Lives Matter protests had been ongoing. Protesters mounted peaceful demonstrations by doing Die Ins (blocking off roads by laying down in them) on I-35W and I-94, marching through the city, blocking the entrances to the Mall of America, etc., and these protests had been met with a lot of white people who viewed themselves as socially progressive complaining about how they ought to protest the "right way". This is micro aggressive shorthand for "in a way that can be conveniently ignored". I find it difficult to accept other characterizations as valid when the same people have difficulty staying consistent about what the "right way" looks like. Leading up to George Floyd's murder, though, we saw Botham Jean and Breonna Taylor both killed by police within a year of each other, and in both instances, killed in their own homes. In Botham Jean's case, the officer broke into his home and then excused her behavior by saying she believed she was in her apartment and he was a burglar. You might understand why this is a hard pill for me to swallow. ➡️ But when things changed, in my view, was with the prosecutorial incompetence surrounding the racially motivated murder of Ahmaud Arbery. What transpired after that in Minneapolis, and many other cities, was a drive among some black men to arm themselves which was not dissimilar to how the Black Panthers operated in the 80s. They logic seemed to be that if they stood to get murdered by police in their own homes, get gunned down on the street for taking a jog through their neighborhood, then they should carry firearms and do so openly, because the law was not, and is not, designed to protect them. I didn't expect that a riot would happen in Minneapolis itself, because nothing like that had ever happened there before, but I felt something was different about the atmosphere there, even watching from a distance as I was. My friends still living there felt it, too. But when the riots happened, I had a closer lens to look through as the situation unfolded. I saw the news, the arial views of a city on fire, the chaos they wanted everyone to see. But I also saw demonstrators meeting and holding a rally by the Gay 90s, my favorite bar. I saw food drives like this. I saw lists of black owned businesses circulating on my socials as people warned each other not to destroy small businesses, to keep the damage and the looting to big box stores. The news covered the burning of the 5th police precinct, but they neglected to mention the money used to build it was diverted from charter school funding in and around Longfellow, where the riots started. And I myself was one of the many who couldn't do anything, who nonetheless found ourselves listening to fire department lines and relaying what we heard to friends to let them know when the police were coming, to keep them out of harm's way, to keep them safe. ➡️ You see, this is what we've come to. Five years ago when all of this was happening, we got a sensationalized version of a traumatizing and difficult event from legacy media like NBC, CNN, and CBS, all of whom should be ashamed of themselves for their handling of it. Fire and blood generate ratings. I know that. I'm not a fool. But fire and blood also dehumanize communities, and leave the door wide open for narratives to become binary arguments with no room for nuance. Now you'll notice I didn't mention right wing media. They don't get a pass either. I just don't think anyone would be surprised at the way they covered things. What I do know is that Proud Boys were coming into the city to stir the pot from other states. They were coming in armed. Friends in the middle of it all were keeping each other on alert when they were spotted. And this was happening by the second night. What I do know is that in the wake of all of it, the city and the state underwent comprehensive reforms to the way they handled policing, establishing lines to call for mental health emergencies and the like. What I do know is that the city went as far as to establish a housing voucher program to make amends for bulldozing the Rondo, an affluent black neighborhood to make room for an expanded I-94. But you wouldn't know any of that because the major news outlets never covered these developments. When we watch the news, we often get the climax of the story without the reasons why it's happening or the community driven efforts to rebuild after the fact. We get doom and gloom, violence and anger, but we don't get to see the grieving, the offering of aid, the communal support that comes after. So we end up with these narratives that tell us a distilled version of the truth while leaving what we need to know to make sense of it out of the equation. And this is ultimately why I can't trust our news, and don't really think you should either. At least, not at face value.

Where they see an enemy, he sees a potential wellspring of information he may use to unlock myriad secrets about the gods of the Waxing World. Ank A'tar is a man with a dangerous bent toward curiosity, and it shows when he seeks out the Great King alone.
