demoing a new Django app for my enterprise coworkers is always fun. I try to guess how long before someone asks “can I save that to excel?”

Today it was 7mins. My answer ”of course you can, click this one button” (the only acceptable answer to that question imo) #django #DelightYourCustomers

Picture it, 2026, you, an experienced Django dev giggle in delight when you see the tech stack and cool shit we're building.

Whenever meeting new friends I like to start out “Hi my name is Jay. What you do believe about the nature of the universe?”

What software puzzle are you ponding this holiday weekend?

For me, I can’t figure out why I get zero results from:

Model.objects.filter(array_of_arrays=my_array_of_arrays)

*Yet*, if I take it’s .query/ and paste into pgsql, BOOM I get results.

If I tell an AI to keep reply brief, does that result in a lower power consumption?

T minus 9mins before this hunk of windows (10) garbage corporate laptop reboots and updates to windows 11. Tomorrow might just be a mental health day to grieve.

Me: “🤷 coulda had an SQL on the backend but we’re on that microservices bullshit right now”

Today, on out of pocket things I’ve done with Duckdb - injesting the entire content of my Outlook file so I can supplement advanced features not found in Outlook. Like the ability to search for and find an email. 🙄

CRUD all the way down.
Most of what we call "tech" is about getting the right information into a database and trying to prevent the wrong person from reading or updating it.

If you schedule an hour long meeting to read a PowerPoint to me that you didn’t send in advance, don’t be offended when I fall asleep. This isn’t story time before a nap send that shit in advance so we can have a meaningful discussion jfc

Oh god my heart when I see “typescript” and “stored procedures”.

and also yes, business logic needs to be in the database, not in the application.

Read Django’s dumpdata into duckdb in one command. (sed because I needed to clean up some logging junk).

25 year old seen googling “what is a packed decimal”. The obscurity of an IBM mainframe is our only hope.

I just know that if I wish hard enough, some ambitious data person at IBM is going to figure out how to embed @duckdb.org into IMS and open source it and ill figure out how to convince an architect to let us try it.

Had this pc as a kid as a handmedown from the school lab. I painted the case and keyboard blue so it would look like an iMac.
For IBM PS/2 fans, here's a picture of a PS/2 Model 25 with "mini me"; a promotional plastic "caddy" that would sit on your desk. You could put paper clips or other small items into. I do love computer memorabilia as well.

If #Excel adds one more freaking option for where to save a file in an attempt to use their shitty one drive I swear I'm going to pull whats left of my hair out.
