And while I was playing with the nebula technique, I animated the displacement, futzed with some particle systems, and started making explosions:

And here's an excerpt without denoising, again, low sample rate. Amazing glittering effect coming from the noise on the nebula.

That was rendered in the lower-quality Eevee renderer built into Blender. It doesn't handle lighting and reflections as well as the more upmarket Cycles (also built-in), but it's a tad quicker.

Here're an excerpt from the same animation data rendered in Cycles, low sample rate, with de-noising:

It's just on a card in front of the camera with a hole cut out for the viewer, and I messed with the material settings to make the change to red. The camera shake is a noise modifier on the camera's X and Z coordinates allowed to affect it gradually and fade out over a constrained number of frames.

While playing with material settings to perfect the look of the ship (see my Imgur log imgur.com/a/enterprise...) I came up with a new inexpensive technique for making nebula clouds, which then informed the shield effect. Not happy with the behaviour of the shield bubble yet thought.

Thank you!

Oh my! You're too kind, thank you! I'm glad you understood the intent. I kind of consider this to be a concept render more than a finished product, but I had resolved recently to not hold myself to impossible standards and actually just allow myself to release something unfinished once in a while.

While we're talking about excellent 23rd century rendering and "In the XYZ Century" captions, this recent STO bundle trailer is very fun: youtu.be/S4GGIVj20yw

And fair warning, there's a good deal of casual, unconsidered sexism. Most is simply 60s ethics, but "Gamesters Of Triskelion" has a particularly disturbing scene that the show then does not react to. If you're braced for some of that culture shock, there are indeed many brilliant episodes to enjoy.

Ah, yes - Did you catch how the lighting in the FC grading test didn't match? I had a chat with Prov about it and I correctly guessed that it began as an exercise to exactly match the lighting setup in FC (Mission 10000% accomplished!), and the idea of compositing the ship against V'ger came later.

Not sure who you mean exactly... JTVFX has some TOS/TMP stuff, and Mylex does nice work. Oh and @howieeday.bsky.social of course!
