Uber had a use case — people getting places — and while it burned money, it didn’t burn anywhere near as much, and its core infrastructure wasn’t the reason it burned so much money. Uber’s initial — and, admittedly, vast — losses were reflective of the cost of customer and driver acquisition, which was a largely one-time cost, and would be offset by the lifetime value of the customer and the driver. Anthropic and OpenAI would be like Uber if each Uber ride actually cost $1000 because each car weighed 54,000 tons, and gas was made by throwing giraffes into a wood chipper. Uber has a use case. Uber was not trying to work out, ten years in, what it was actually selling, and every business line it added made sense, like delivering food instead of people. To be clear, Uber sucks as a business, but at the very least is a business. You know what Uber also is? A $201 billion market capitalization business, as the literal dominant player in its industry, creating no other real industrial growth. There is no hypergrowth market that followed Uber, nor will there ever be. Uber also won’t collapse if big tech doesn’t constantly feed hundreds of billions of dollars into its infrastructure every single year without fail — though I will add it did raise $1.2 billion earlier in the year. Anyway, what is this argument? That OpenAI and Anthropic will just keep burning money forever, and then eventually go public, and then…what? They’ll be fine? Because OpenAI and Anthropic don’t just need a bunch of money — they need the entire economy to keep believing they’re real, because unlike Uber, people are still not paying enough for these services, and then they need big tech to build their infrastructure for them, and keep feeding them money. There is no scenario where these companies stand on their own two feet. They cannot do it alone. And when they die, I do not think people will really notice if their stuff forwards to Microsoft Copilot or Amazon Rufus.
