Basically everything Linda Williams wrote was brilliant and illuminating, but "Melodrama Revised" is maybe the most important essay I have ever read on U.S. commercial cinema. It fundamentally changed the way I thought about American film--and, by extension, U.S. popular culture and political life.

Wanted to post that while I did not publish anything this year, I did work with a bunch of colleagues to build the first union for Arts profs at McGill in its 200-year history; we were officially certified last month.

That said, I fear that this is the energy said post is giving.

The young person at the register showed tremendous restraint in looking at my middle-aged, bearded self and not saying "of course these are the books you ordered."
