He/him. Rude mechanical. Award losing maker of things. Social impact tech director. Fan of guillotines. Settler Canadian living on the ancestral homelands and traditional territory of the Attawandaron, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples (Guelph, ON).
Me: watches the movie “Together” very much by myself. And also in the dark.

Cozy-ish folk-ish horror? Check. Set in Nova Scotia and full of Maritime tradition? Check. Witches? Check. Or maybe not check, maybe it’s just a metaphor for strong independent women. Witches? Check.

Two thumbs up from this Nova Scotian-stuck-in-Ontario.

Ugh. I blasted through @premeemohamed.com’s novella “The First Thousand Trees” far too quickly. I couldn’t put it down. And then I ran out of pages. They just stopped coming. If you like human stories told against the backdrop of a post-apoc setting this trilogy of novellas is a must must read.

I don’t think I have the language to describe how much I enjoy @sgj.bsky.social ‘s storytelling. Which is the very short, dodgy way of saying “The Buffalo Buffalo Hunter” was top shelf excellent and you should read it.

Finished up “Mad Sisters of Esi” last night and I’m not religious, but I think what I felt reading this was a religious experience. Might be my fav for 2025. Grabbed it because cool cover art and because @reactorsff.bsky.social included it in one of their newsletters. Perfect banger.

I finally got a copy of @adapalmer.bsky.social’s Inventing the Renaissance and holy moly it was great. Is “gonzo history” a thing? (gonzo journalism implies the existence of other gonzo subjects) Because I don’t know how to describe the style any other way. Anyway I did so much wonderful learning.

I listened to the third @nightvaleradio.bsky.social book while driving to Akron and back for Earthquaker Day. This is a great way to tell backstory that fills in some mystery while adding even more mystery in other spots. I don’t know how to further describe it, and that seems pretty perfect.

Playing catch up on summer reading activities. Read this one back in June. This series has so far been a solid fun time. The dog quote really did me in. I was not expecting to be a blubbery mess reading an otherwise fairly wholesome book.

This lil duder has just been chirping all day. I can’t tell if it’s reciting some sort of epic poetry — the Iliad of his kind — to the other small creatures, or if he’s out here drumming up a rebellion. Either way I put some nuts out. Gotta support the arts and/or the uprising.

New art for the art collection.

Happy decade of this absolute banger existing to all those who celebrate.

First time I’ve listened to this album straight through in a good long while and it is just perfect front to back.

The last boop.

I will read the next Golden Girls cozy murder mystery book if one is written. Was this good? Definitely not yes. You know that really not great movie you watch constantly? That. This was good enough to give my brain focus and distraction.

Wrapped up the new Nayler novel. It is labeled “dystopian sci-fi” which somehow means “2025 non-fiction”. Excellent thriller. Maybe not for people who still have positive feelings about technology.

June 30, 2008 – May 18, 2025.

We said goodbye to Buckley this morning. I don’t know when the correct words will leave my throat, they are stuck there. Certainly not today.

Finished Richard Osman’s novel, The Thursday Murder Club. It was recommended by @justinwigard.bsky.social. Highly enjoyable, solid first book for diving into cozy murder mystery. I don’t think I can binge read the genre, but it’ll defo be good to break up my normally heavy/depressing book choices.

Magic sauces to get through federal election night.

Finished @malloryomeara.bsky.social ‘s newest book, Daughter of Daring, this evening. 5 outta 5. Like the Lady from the Black Lagoon I really love the “hey come with me while I obsessively learn about this important bit of entertainment history” style in the narrative voice. Highly recommend.

Hey Pierre, get fucked.

The books I read from January through March: Absolution by @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social, The Wood at Midnight by Susanna Clarke, Polostan by Neal Stephenson, and a small pile of books by @premeemohamed.com (not pictured is the audiobook version of Apple-Tree Throne).

Books are great.

Look at how good @doubleproficiency.com ‘s new book, Geologist’s Primer, is and how well it pairs with the previous one, Herbalist’s Primer. Glorious!

Did I get that book that Lizard-In-A-Skin-Suit — Zuck — attempted to block, then made way more popular by doing that? Yes. Yes I did.
