A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Saw Good Fortune this evening and really enjoyed it. They managed to do a great job weaving together incredibly timely social commentary with fresh humor.

Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.

I propose a tagline.

Microsoft: Almost Good

It's uncanny how often they nearly have the right solution.

"...the embattled birthright citizenship legal principle." To clarify: birthright citizenship is more than legal principle. It is enshrined in the 14th amendment and affirmed by the Supreme Court (1898). Nor is it embattled. The current case relates to nation-wide injunctions, a tangential attack.

The flight of US scientists is alarming.

While I'm glad to see European investment in science, I worry the focus is on technology and applied, not general, science.

General science is home to exploration, curiosity, and most humanity-changing innovation.

As the US Cuts Scientific Talent, Europe Launches an Initiative to Attract It
The Choose Europe for Science program will invest more than half a billion dollars between 2025 and 2027 to recruit researchers and scientists—especially from the United States.

Thunderbolts was better than I expected. Not up to the golden era of Marvel movie standards, but a fun watch that was surprisingly character driven.

Visited Spokane this weekend. I have friends and family there, but walking around a bit reminded me of how good we have it in the Willamette Valley. So many shades of green.

Anyone else worried about NIST and how integral their work is to cyber security? Holding out hope it stays under the current slapdash policy and technology blunderbuss of DC.

New from me in @newrepublic.com: “Primary Every Democrat.”

If the current crop cannot demonstrate they care more about democracy than enjoying three-day weekends, we should flood the zone and challenge them all.
Primary Every Democrat
It’s exhausting to watch poll-tested, donor-beholden congressional Democrats continue to be too old, too cloistered, and too bumbling to do anything as the government burns.

If Jesus were alive today, he would need to have saved around $230 million every year to match Elon Musk's net worth. That 2,024 year old would have needed to sock away about $630K per day.

I'm interested in learning more about the Shadow Cabinet concept. It seems like it could be a more organized and effective way of providing scrutiny and publicizing alternatives.

I appreciate @katie-drummond.bsky.social affirming the sound journalistic standards of WIRED, and providing such a direct, candid response to the election: "I won’t sugarcoat it: The outcome of last week’s US presidential election wasn’t the one WIRED wanted."

Nice!

Canceled @nytimes.com. Coverage has biased anti-democracy recently. The July 4th opinion piece decrying voting was offensive in its timing, occuring both on Independence Day and prior to an election where democratic principles are at stake. We need, and I would return for, responsible reporting.

It is very problematic that a company can reach out two years after a purchase and brick a device. It's a niche device, but I use it every day. Fortunately, I purchased the Spotify Car Thing when it was heavily discounted, so I'm not out the $90 that many folks are. www.wired.com/story/spotif...

Civil War was surprisingly artful and thoughtful.

Politics and back story were subtle, making a better, more relatable story and message. People see the "sides" as they want in this film.

Ostensibly focusing on wartime photojournalism, a proximity alert was the tangible takeaway.
