I often hear people say “but it’s the Republicans that are elitist.” It’s true. They love their rich folk. But these terms bring up another kind of elitism—the snobbery of the educated. Some of these words have been used to make people feel stupid.

Not quite the same experience but on a visit to East Berlin in the late 1980s I felt so suffocated by the police presence that my sister and I scurried back to West Berlin as quickly as we could. I’ll never forget that feeling.
