Maybe one of the reasons there are so many unhinged academics is that in order to keep your job, you’re constantly required to tout yourself as a Scholar of World-Historical Significance, even as your office’s ceiling tiles slowly dislodge themselves to fall on your head.

how do you focus on writing lectures for a new module when you know attendance will be poor & many of the essays will be written by a brainless computer? why keep up research & "public engagement" when we are seen as so expendable & secondary to what a university is for?

Every aspect of UK universities is in crisis. My institution is going to implement a voluntary severance scheme to remove 5% of staff while spending wildly on marketing & "prestige" events. Students can barely afford to live & aren't turning up for class, & many are reliant on AI for their essays.

Feels like I'm just posting to the void since I'm just getting started here, but why not. I write a weekly newsletter, and this week I write about how far away from reading and critical thinking we’ve come. It's lacking in our education, COVID learning loss, social media attention spans, all of it.
We need to get back to reading and critical thinking
Because 2024 feels different from 2016.
