It seems that owning free and clear is good way to motivate the market losses and protect against loosing one's home. I can dollar cost average what I would have paid into the mortgage over the next 5 years to build that account back up.

What about paying off the mortgage? If my retirement account is going to crash, I feel like taking about half out and paying off the mortgage will be the best use of my funds.

This worked for the last few decades, but this time feels different. The usual recovery may not happen. The structure of the economy may be fundamentally alteted. And those of us close to retirement won't have time to recover.

It's so disappointing when things can't be located at a repository. I have a couple items I ask about every 5 years or so.
