Shadowheart’s memory of that afternoon at Astarion’s apartment is hazy at best. But hazy doesn't mean she remembers nothing. Of course, having your memory wiped continuously from a young age takes its toll. She imagines the surface of her mind must now resemble an old chalkboard. When new, each wipe of the duster removes every mark of the chalk. But over time, traces of what came before can be seen; the faint smudge and curl of the past – blurred, almost illegible, but still there.

Chapter 23: Feed my Frankenstein Mysterious disappearances, a present from the Archmage and a much needed moment of respite. May'va frowns. But the unspoken consequences are clear enough. Astarion’s been in a foul temper lately. She’d like to think it’s because he misses her, the way things used to be between them, but it’s more likely to be the loss of his most recent favourite, conspicuously absent the last few days. Another mysterious disappearance. And Lord Ancunín has been conspicuously pissed off. If she doesn’t appear in the reception room at the appointed time, who knows what will happen. They sit in silence for a while, until Talli finishes her hair with a final flourish. ‘There,’ she says, clasping her hands together as through in quiet applause. ‘Don’t you look beautiful?’ A black and White image of Astarion and May'va - They are looking at each other and you can only see the back of May'va. Maeva and Astarion are in a dark storage cellar, lit by a candle. They are looking down at the Necromancy of Thay, and looking concerned. Chapter Summary A rummage in the cellar and a trip to see the wizards. ‘Do you think that Karlach and Wyll might be at the party?’ Maeva’s expression is hopeful, and Astarion realises with mild surprise that he’d like nothing more than to see them both at the party, but he’s not sure if even Withers has the power to bring Karlach back without irreparable damage to her heart. And knowing Wyll, the gallant fool would never leave her and come alone. ‘It would be nice,’ Astarion says. ‘But don’t get your hopes up too much, my love. It would be a tricky feat even for our death-wizened friend.’ He returns his attentions to the crate and spies the corner of something brown and aged buried at the bottom. ‘Ah ha!’ After some rummaging, he lifts out a heavy brown object and plunks it down on an unopened crate with a heavy thwaap. The rictus scream and petrified eyes glower back at him, strands of violet light curling and misting over the flesh and bone cover; the book elicits the same visceral chill as it did the first time he laid eyes on it.

I did.’ He says quietly his eyes tender, pupils dilating. ‘And it appears my wish was granted.’ He runs a finger along her jawline then up to the tip of her ear. Gods, she loves how soft he is like this, the way he looks at her, the way he touches her. His kisses are less practiced that they used to be, and oh, so much better for that. They consume her, his mouth and hands hungry and searching.

I absolutely adore @tynithia.bsky.social 's story where Gale learns about his family from his great-grandfather Gaius' journals. It's filled with joy and laughter and tears (and some very tasty spice) - and I totally fell in love with the whole family.

'Alright. Your wish is my command.' He cleared his throat. She lay back on the cushions and listened. "Harken close and beware the Vampyr. Beware its cold beauty. Beware its charm. Beware its curse. Above all, beware the pale noble, for the Vampyr cannot bear to be of the common folk." 'Hmm. Pale beauty and charm. Nothing you don't already know about me, Darling.' He flicked the pages forward. 'Ah, here we go…' "But remember, your home is your fortress, if protected well. If you hear a knock in the night, be wary. Let no stranger into your home." He looked at her. 'Maybe it's me who should be wary of you. After all, you came and knocked on my door. In fact, you didn't even knock. Tut tut.' 'You have a lovely reading voice. Did you know that?' Maeva mumbled from her prone position on the cushions. 'It's smooth and buttery.' And it was sending pleasant tingles down her spine and further afield. 'I'm not a bread roll, Darling. Please. Now listen to this. "If it be a friend, look upon them. Do you find them pallid and wan?" He peered down at her. 'You do look a bit pale, my sweet.' He narrowed his eyes, then bent down to kiss her. She giggled again as he pulled away. She really had to get a grip on this new giggling thing. Fighters didn't giggle. "See you any mark upon their neck? See you any dirt upon their clothes?" She wriggled. Gods, his voice was sinful. He swept his eyes over her. 'Hmm, your clothes are filthy. I suppose it’s not really surprising given the past few days. Has it only been a few days? It feels like forever. He dropped the book and leaned over her, their bodies touching. There was a soft breath on her neck then cool lips brushing over where he'd last fed from her. 'You know, you could just ask for help,' Astarion walked over and grabbed an edge of the canvas that she was trying - and failing - to haul over the tent frame. 'What, you mean like you always do?' She stuck her tongue out at him as they manoeuvred the tent covering into place. Touché 'You are the leader. You can order us to do whatever you want.' He smirked. She made a face. 'No I'm not. Trip is the leader.' Astarion threw her over a bedroll that lay at his feet. 'You both lead. And perhaps he is the head in some ways.' He tied the final tent cord on his side. 'But you are definitely the heart.' She stopped what she was doing and looked at him, eyes wide, still holding the bedroll. 'What a…' she blinked. Oh gods, was that… tears? Please no. 'What a nice thing to say.' It was a nice thing to say. Hells. But he'd not been feeling fully himself lately, plagued by things that might be called conscience, even empathy – but that was impossible. He'd lost any semblance of those a long time ago. This was not the time to be finding them. And yet… here he was. Saying nice things. 'it’s just a fact.' He snipped, and nodded over to where Arabella was playing with Scratch and Fluff. 'A child, a dog and an owlbear cub. These are not heartless choices.' They sit in silence for a moment. One half of her is yelling at herself to get a grip, take back everything she's just said. Halsin is a good man. He loves her in his own druidic way. They get on well - and the sex is pretty good. If somewhat… ursine at times. But the other half knows that this has to happen. And anyway, he deserves better than her. To her surprise he reaches over and takes her hand. 'If this is what you want then go, and with my blessing. I would not hold you back from your own journey. I'm just sorry that it won't include me.' Her throat constricts, and she swallows. 'It will always include you in some way.' 'Where will you go?' 'Baldur's Gate. For now.' 'Will you stay with Shadowheart?' 'Astarion.' 'Ah.' He nods. Purses his lips. 'Of course.' He gets to his feet, his bulk casting a shadow over her. 'I think Rolan is heading back there tonight. I'm sure he would let you accompany him. He's become quite adept at portals of all kinds lately.' He stretches out a hand which she takes, letting him pull her up. He holds out his arms and she slides into them, his muscular warmth enveloping her. She closes her eyes and clings onto him, his familiar musky scent making her throat ache and her eyes water. 'I'm sorry.' She looks up, biting her lip. 'Don't be. What we had was wonderful. It should be celebrated for what it was. And not mourned because its time has passed.' Gods. Even for Halsin that was quite corny. She smiles, gives a shaky chuckle. 'Always the Druid.' He grins back at her, Then his smile falters as he cups her face in his hands and gazes intently at her. His eyes close, and he places a gentle kiss on her forehead, his lips lingering before he pulls away. 'Did you expect anything less?' Astarion has avoided having much to do with the Gur young. He doesn’t like how he feels when he sees them. It’s different to the self-disgust that assails him whenever he sees other spawn he recognises as former targets. It’s worse. It doesn't matter how often Maeva, and others now, reassure him. No reassurances change the fact that he led these children to their undeath. He'd just... stolen them. He's not the biggest fan of children, but even so, that was a bit much. 'Astarion.' Maeva's voice cuts into his self-loathing. 'Hmm?' He turns to look at her. 'Show them your daggers.' 'Oh yes, why not? That's what we need down here, darling. Miniature spawn running amok with a greatsword and two daggers.' His daggers remain firmly sheathed. 'And before I forget. What happened in that alley?' Chessa shrugs. 'A couple of spawn. They wanted these.' She pulls out two of the ingenious bags that Dal's been using lately to store and transport blood. Apparently the idea came from Blurg, the hobgoblin who was part of the Society of Brilliance. A questionable name if he ever heard one. They use the large, liquid repelling petals to… well he's not sure… something bizarre he has no doubt. Whatever it is, the petals can be made into little pouches that hold a perfectly formed portion of blood, and the best thing about them is that you can actually sink your fangs in and suck the blood out as if it were a small, portable neck. Of all the things Dal and her strange associates (and she has gathered quite a few) have created, this was definitely his favourite. 'Chess kicked 'em in the bollocks.' Kass pipes up.

Astarion is actually a little fascinated, because who wouldn’t want to see another version of themselves? One who made different choices, achieved different outcomes? On the other hand, did he really want to meet an ascended version of him? He has no regrets vis-a-vis his non-ascension – well, not really and not often, but it would definitely sting if say, the ascendant hadn’t actually turned into an evil megalomaniac and was living a happy and fulfilled life. Of course, if he met him and he was an asshole, that would be fine.

But as a kid, his favorite journals were those written by his great-grandfather Gaius, a powerful war mage and member of the mysterious Arcane Brotherhood. Gale would stay up late, lost in his great-grandfather’s poetic words about the Weave, his epic battles, and adventures. But his favorite part of the journals were stories about the love of Gaius’s life, a beautiful sun elf named Ellandra. When he discovered that his former traveling companion was the same elf from his great-grandfather’s journal, he told her wanted to know everything.

I through we had a connection, an… understanding.’ A ribbon of snow and sleet spirals up from the ground and encircles her, twisting around her waist, transforming into insidious icy fingers which slide into her clothing, burning cold flames over her belly and melt down between her thighs. She gasps and moves away, clenching her fists and swallowing down a violent, acidic surge of hatred. How she detests these men and their mind games. He takes a step closer. ‘I’m just making sure that you take every opportunity to consider my last offer.’

Maeva and Astarion: A visit to Auntie Magda, a trip to the hot springs and some home truths. Summary: The buildings in this part of the town are different to the ones near the centre where she and Astarion live. The fifteen or so Gur who have ventured down here have settled in an area constructed with stone and zurkhwood, and have commandeered half a dozen homes of varying dimensions, little bridges and outside staircases connecting them all together. In the centre of their group of buildings is a cooking fire, and scattered around it, a selection of cushions, stools and old crates have been arranged as a cosy living area. The ubiquitous luminous mushrooms are peppered around generously, and someone has taken some of the magic fungi and strung them together into chains of light which twist and hang over the bridges and between the houses.

'Astarion has too much time to think, but he can’t concentrate on reading, and there’s only so much pacing he can do before Chessa shouts at him to ‘stop clunking around’ while she tries to rest. Frankly he finds that offensive. Stealth is his middle name. He does not ‘clunk’. But he’s too weary to take issue with the spawnling, and anyway, he’s finding her presence strangely comforting. His mind strays back to the past. To another very different bedroom. He can’t remember exactly when, but it was early in his spawnhood – not quite long enough to extinguish every speck of hope, but close. That was probably the last time he felt fear even remotely similar to this. The fear of losing someone.'

She’s no longer convinced that she’s completely unworthy or immune to the need for friendship, maybe even love. Her only regret now is that she had to die to realise it fully.

#tavqotd Hard to choose just four even, but this is Maeva - she's half drow but tries to hide it because she was brought up on the surface and was shunned by the surface elf kids. The tadpole gang are the first group of friends she's ever had who she feels accepted by.

Maeva doesn't dislike children but has no desire to be anyone's mother. One reason she left Reithwin and Halsin was that the orphan children started calling her 'Mummy Maeva' to match 'Daddy Halsin.'

It's been almost 6 months since they defeated the Elderbrain. Everybody seems to have found a purpose in life. Except Maeva. Should she stay with Halsin and become a 'mummy' to the refugees (something that frankly terrifies her) or leave and find her own adventure? Maybe with her best friend Astarion, down in the Underdark... 'I'm going to miss you.' It was true. And not just as a friend. They'd been good together in battle too, their movements and weapons enhancing each other like a paired set of steel blades. She bit her lip. And they had fucked - as he so eloquently put it - twice, until she'd had a flash of conscience and finished that particular source of enjoyment. Sometimes she was such an idiot. Maeva (Tav) and Astarion kissing in the Underdark Maeva (Tav) Drow talk, hot water and spawn trauma. 'The map is now in my possession.’ Minthara pulls the folded directions out of a pocket and flourishes it at Yousen. 'I have too many memories of never-ending meanders in pointless, repetitive circles while following Maeva.' Yousen chuckles. Maeva glares at them both. 'You are an outstanding warrior and a formidable negotiator. However, your navigational skills leave a lot to be desired.’ Minthara shudders as if remembering a particularly horrific example. ‘But we cannot all excel in every area.' Maeva mutters under her breath. 'At least I'm not scared of clowns.’ 'I am not scared of clowns. I merely find them an unnecessary burden on the imagination.’ Minthara nods at the servant who has accompanied her for the last few days of her visit. 'Lead on.' Maeva can’t help smirking. 'It's lucky that your sense of direction is so developed, Minty.’ ‘And take Violet.’ Yousen gives his sibling a little push towards them. She hangs back a little until he gives her an encouraging nod.
