"ICE could shoot you at any time, and that won't cut your health care costs."

Don't forget that voters are only bothered by being shot if it affects their monthly bills, according to dem strategy.

The hypothetical actually happened, the discourse did argue that women couldn’t read sf/f due to male-dominated prestige circles, and this was then proven conclusively wrong.

There was in fact a very similar discourse regarding SF/fantasy a few years ago when it was more male-dominated, during which time I had absolutely no difficulty finding female readers and authors all over fanfiction.net and AO3. Now they’re on the Hugo awards list too!

I don’t think this hypothetical bsky discourse prevents men from reading, either.

Sure, but you don't have wait for a book to be nominated for a Hugo before reading it. In fact, you don't even need to wait for it to be published - there are web sites and subreddits full of all sorts of interesting fiction.

Non-fiction is a bit different, but again not hard to find.

I really don't think the decline of reading among men is due to a lack of supply. For one, the books men read before are still available (for free, depending on your commitment to copyright law).

Huh? Maybe it's genre but there's plenty going on in SF/fantasy, and new subgenres like LitRPGs forming.

Yeah a lot of guys don't read but I'm in a book club of mostly guys and we have no trouble finding things to read. There's plenty out there if you want to read.

Looking at the video the image is flat enough to be a Pepper's Ghost. Seems to be a plane of glass through the middle of the device as well.

I didn't find anything beyond press coverage of the announcement, but I admittedly didn't look that hard.

Apparently there are other 3d holo displays available for things like retail displays, but they seem to suffer a similar affliction of vendor lock-in software.
January 7, 2026 at 2:28 AM
Even if the software functions, it's, well...what if you have ideas for a 3d hologram *other* than anime girl obsessed with whatever Grok is on about this week.
January 7, 2026 at 2:22 AM
The hologram thingy would be way better if it worked like a monitor. Razer's hardware is great, but their software is *terrible*.

They're advertising private AI but it's a cloud service?

Not the main issue, but people these days think the natural state of software is running on a remote server operated by a sketchy company.

I owe Freud an apology for dismissing his idea that most people are motivated by weird sexual hangups, and I hate it.

To be fair, politicians following through on campaign promises *is* newsworthy.

Having previously worked in customer service, that is not surprising at all.

This laptop daycare says they have 65,535 enrolled laptops. Seems fishy.

A lot of tech products are adversarial to the user, and hiding the internals makes it easier to get away with surprise subscription fees, planned obsolescence, etc..
