I just rewatched the resignation speech by Sir Geoffrey Howe which effectively brought down Thatcher and I think much of it, regarding the EU, still rings true. Even some 35 years later and a decade after the Brexit referendum.

So in other words, they disarmed him, shot him a few times until he was motionless on the floor, and then shot him a few more times to make sure he was dead? It's noot even a pretence anymore they're just killing people for resisting them.

This was an incredible and pivotal speech by Mark Carney, and I think the approach he outlined, following Alexander Stubb's example, of a "values-based realism", is the only sane way forward.

European leaders need to start working together, with each other, with Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Cuba and whoever else will join to provide a united front against Trump's aggressive expansionism before it's too late.
And more importantly when will European leaders realise that the US is no longer an Ally and that we will have to fight 2 Superpowers and a regional power in the next world war?

While I agree that "it was a mistake to hit that catholic church", I find it abhorrent that this is the line. Every mosque, university, hospital, apartment and office building that has been levelled generates no response. Every dead child and every dead aid worker wasn't bad enough.
