The advantage of this is that if there's any packet loss, the client will just keep requesting the missing piece(s). In the old system it would just keep requesting the whole image every interval until the network disconnected.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter had something like this and I've never seen it replicated, which is a shame. DQ has a lot of elements that makes it a tough recommend but the battle system isn't one of them.
