Protests are great. But, this is what we need to do now

The same white voices that call for removing Confederate statues are now rushing to memorialize Charlie Kirk. Let’s be clear: Kirk was a white supremacist who believed in white rule and showed no regard for the lives and dignity of Black, Brown, LGBTQ, Palestinian, and Indigenous people.

Since the early 20th century, the white power structure in the United States has strategically weaponized fear of socialism and communism to discredit movements for racial, economic, and social justice. This fear-mongering has served as a powerful political tool—used not to protect democracy, but to maintain the racialized status quo and suppress redistribution of power and resources. The First Red Scare…

A Breakdown of the Right’s and Left’s “Fears” around Socialism and Communism.
Right-Wing Use of Propaganda: The right wing’s “fear” of socialism and communism—especially in the U.S.—has been deeply strategic, emotional, and racialized. While often framed as an ideological concern about “freedom” or “government control,” it has historically functioned as a tool to maintain the status quo: preserving white supremacy, protecting corporate power, and undermining collective organizing among working-class people and communities of color.

*This image is from the PBS Documentary, "Propaganda: The Art of Selling Lies." I am writing a series of articles about the use of propaganda to ensure the status quo and impede progress. This first article is a broad overview of historical moments and the progress and backlash of racial progress, including the propaganda used to challenge justice. I have bolded particular language, words, and narratives that are used repetitively throughout American history and the present day.

Derrick Bell, George Floyd, and the Illusion of Progress: Interest Convergence and the Permanence of Racism in Today’s America
When legal scholar Derrick Bell introduced his theory of interest convergence, he disrupted the idea that racial progress in America is a steady march forward. Bell argued that advances in racial justice only occur when they align with the interests of those in power—specifically white elites. In his seminal 1980 essay, Brown v. Board of Education and the Interest-Convergence Dilemma…

Fascism, Authoritarianism, and the Suppression of Education and History
Throughout history, authoritarian and fascist regimes have sought to control and restrict education as a means of maintaining power. By limiting access to knowledge and erasing or rewriting history, these regimes manipulate public perception, suppress dissent, and consolidate their rule. Education and historical memory are potent tools in shaping collective consciousness, and dictatorships recognize that controlling these elements is crucial for sustaining their authority.

Have you ever heard of Marilyn Buck? I hadn’t. I often ask myself: What does it mean to be a good ancestor? What actions can I take in this life that will contribute to justice and liberation for future generations? In my search for both knowledge and meaningful action, I’ve been studying the history of freedom fighters—those who have risked everything in the struggle for justice.

I would love my Democratic Senators to do a town hall. I have some things I want them to know
Democratic campaign committees and state parties are partnering to host a series of town halls in GOP-held districts after Republicans were advised against holding town halls.

The districts: AZ-6, CO-8, IA-3, MI-10, NE-2, PA-7, PA-8.

Lesson Two: Defend Institutions “It is institutions that help us to preserve decency. They need our help as well. Do not speak of “our institutions” unless you make them yours by acting on their behalf. Institutions do not protect themselves. They fall one after the other unless each is defended from the beginning. So choose an institution you care about—a court, a newspaper, a law, a labor union—and take its side.”

Gil Scott-Heron (1949–2011) was an American poet, musician, and activist, best known for his fusion of spoken word, jazz, soul, and funk to address social and political issues. His work laid the foundation for hip-hop and rap, influencing generations of artists. This piece of spoken word poetry is a critique of the white-centered educational system, in particular, the way public school's teach "history,"
