a uniquely balanced and sharp take from one of my favorite designers. one of the few ‘predictions’ of a post-ai world (in design, creativity, and beyond) I can believe in.

fills me with bittersweet hope.

How tired are we collectively about AI? Are we over it yet? Can you even hear about it anymore? I'm sorry if you can't, because this essay will be entirely about it.

(granted the main idea is to not return it to the manufacturer himself, but still)

on the other hand, isn't the story you're referencing exactly about returning the most hazardous product ever™ to its place of manufacturing for disposal?

it's more obvious when looking at it in reverse: podcast/interview transcripts. they're often hard to read

some sentences just keep going and going. some read like sudden interjections. speaker repeats some thoughts and never finishes others

but then you listen to it and it's all clear and natural

might be minor, but Figma greeted me with a “Go touch glass” pop-up the other day (promoting the new liquid glass effect) and I can't stop thinking about how clever and delightfully cheesy that line is. peak copywriting.

an interesting example is “Who Watches the Watchers” where the crew of the Enterprise themselves become considered supernatural and have to be their own skeptics

one of my favorite episodes, aptly titled, “Lisa the Skeptic” deals with this very topic in a really thoughtful and emotional way

significantly better — but only if the updated dialogue adds clear motivation to the characters and some coherence to the plot.

you can't talk your way out of some bizarre creative choices though.

D is the closest, but my criteria is

- offensively low-quality
- made to farm content or manipulate people
- no attempt at communicating an idea or creating smth beautiful/thoughtful

the word ‘slop’ is very apt as opposed to trash/junk/etc — a tasteless homogeneous mass cheaply made from scraps.

a great hot take. hate to admit it, but I now sometimes have to force a thought. and blank pages are more anxiety-inducing than ever.

but: Eric Hoel's analogy to Lucas's/Jackson's obsession with tools over substance is brilliant. AI as a green screen for thought is staying in my mind. thank you!

I personally wouldn't for the same reason: the abstracted rules of chess ≠ the concept of chess. only its part.

e.g. ‘Rules’ is just one of a dozen sections in the wiki article for “Chess”

imo, it's like music theory vs music — an underlying construct that enables a grander, more subjective idea.

I agree, for the reason closest to 3.

to me, understanding chess is inseparable from understanding what chess *is*. the engine doesn't know that the knight looks like a horse, who Kasparov is, or the dramatic contrast of black and white.

I'd argue that even LLMs understand chess better.

what a neat coincidence haha. totally agree, such a lovely band and more proof of french superiority in electronic music.

their ‘kirghiz’ has been my go-to track to enter work mode this month — never fails!
