What’s is a thanatologist? A professional who studies death, dying, and grief.
Is that depressing?
It’s freeing to demystify death and understand the emotional, neurological, and spiritual components of grief.
It’s best used to support through sacred death to allow for hope and joy in living.
It’s so natural for me to normalize and validate grief, including non-death losses, for others. Then I deny, downplay, and hide from my own. Let’s face our grief together and sit with it bravely. I’ll share mine in a comment.

Grief transcends all time and space. Grief is seeing your loved one’s favorite coffee cup in the cupboard. It’s in passing their favorite restaurant. It fills the empty chair. It starts as a a cacophony and settles into an echo.

Thanatophobia, the fear of death, can involve fear of the process (pain), fear of the afterlife (or lack there of), fear of being forgotten, fear that life is meaningless, but if I’m being honest mine is rooted in FOMO.
You?

People often tell me that their grief makes other people uncomfortable. So they avoid social interaction. Isolation is the worst thing for a grieving human. Let’s all try to be the friend who can be comfortable sitting in the presence of someone’s grief. Our job is to care, not to cure.

There is no “right” way to die, hold a funeral, or grieve. When we engage in conversations about death we learn from each other, expand our ideas and understanding, and create a sacred space at the threshold between life and death.

Death will not be the great equalizer until all bodies are equally valued in life.
Here’s a great podcast episode with Dr. Kami Fletcher.

Natural burials feel powerful and intimate in a way that helps me appreciate the circle of life and death. What are the options for green burial in your areas?

It took seeing adult bullies to understand that my childhood bullies didn’t even really want to hurt me, they just wanted to feel powerful and how I felt about it wasn’t even in the equation.

I can’t imagine someone not outgrowing that, but apparently it happens quite a lot!

Death in the arts shapes our perception. Is death inherently bad? Can death be kind?

If your deceased loved one created a chatbot to emulate themselves would you want to use it? Are you comforted by the thought of an AI surrogate of your loved one? Would this ameliorate grief or cause maladaptive grief behaviors?

Listen, things are fucked, but that doesn’t mean your accomplishments don’t matter. Wrote a book? Got accepted to a program? Recorded a song? One year sober? Whatever it is, share it. Maybe your joy will bring someone else a bit of joy, and we all need that.

What you post is your online legacy. How you react, what you say, and all your digital footprints will remain as long as the hosting platforms do. Is this good or bad?

Thanatechnology is a conversation we need to be having with those nearing end-of-life. How do they want their digital remains- such as social media accounts, emails, blogs, and videos, handled?

There are choices beyond cremation or embalming. Alkaline Hydrolysis. Natural Organic Reduction. Green (Natural) Burial. Cryopreservation.

What body disposition method appeals to you?

I would love to have the resources to start a community grief garden. Not only would it provide opportunities for individuals to acknowledge and actively process their own grief (including non-death losses), but it would bring people together to support each other’s grief in community.

Grief gardening connects me to the awe and the magic of energy, which is undeniably everywhere in a garden.

Beware the urge to spiritually bypass grief- yours or anyone else’s. If spirituality and religion are a comfort to you that is wonderful, but neither are a bypass or fast track through grief. Grieving is a process.
