The Alcaeus Chronicles: My road-trip supernatural mystery series
Life Sucks: Vampire novel full of messy drama and toxic yuri
Western Fantasy (needs working title): Man can’t die until he fixes some divine level bullshit
There’s also a level nihilism and selfishness he could fall into. He’s helping a new god find herself, will be marked as hers when she ascends, and presumably dying at that time, so why should he care about the mess that’s going on on earth? That’s not going to be his business for much longer.

Levi’s husband is, in his minor defense, very confused about how and why Fate would let him make such an error. The oldest gods are supposed to help solve conflicts, not cause them.

It’s a bride (and a human one at that) because of a little spat with his inverse deity. Let’s just say they don’t always get along, so he marks a human woman, and she marks a mer-man. Elves are too gender fluid, and dwarves tend to break gender norms too much.

(Bonus world building!)
The God of Paternity and Masculinity takes a bride so as to show what a husband should be, for it would be hypocritical for him to dictate how mortals behave to their own spouses should he be unwed.

At the same time, it wasn’t a life that he chose for himself, and he’s rejected it in many ways. His feelings towards the god are complicated. He is a man, and does live by several of the tenets his god calls for, but within the temple he will always be pushed away from them, made to be a woman.

There are benefits to this, privilege that comes with a position where you are to be adored. As the mortal bride to a god he is said gods mouth piece, higher then the priests, with a direct line to him. His up bringing left him well educated, fluent in all the races languages, and skilled at magic.

Being a courier doesn’t make for gentle hands, and you can’t bludgeon your way out of every conflict. A lot of situations require a more gentle touch than he’s willing to give, and to truly succeed he’s going to need to open up, especially since guiding a god is now on his list of responsibilities.

He does care though, about people from all walks of life. He looks out for folks less fortunate, and will step up if he sees something happening that he knows isn’t right. He just doesn’t always show it the best, and doesn’t have many people who know him beyond the persona he shows.

Mix that in with a mess of industrial level scheming and Levi’s got a hell of a lot of road blocks between him and his retirement in the sky. Finding the new god is just step one to her ascension. She still needs to finish forming, and ascend to her divine rights.

Less lucky that by then the new God is god knows where and he now needs to track her down. Equally complicated are a whole mess of religious and inter-racial politics. The elves know something, but he already sent most who knew what was going on to their next life.

With the new god, she can “steal” him. Let his afterlife be authentic to him, but it’s impossible to tell what kind of god she will be. She could be cruel, distant, demanding, but at least serving her in his afterlife he will be remembered as the person he formed himself to be.

As for Death’s deal: as someone marked by the gods his soul belongs to the God of Husbands and Paternity. He was born to be the gods bride, adored and cared for and beloved. When he dies he will be that gods wife, forever branded to the female roles and the name the temple gave him.
