If you want to split the difference and haven't played it before, you should take a look at Fantasian, Sakaguchi and his team replayed FF6 specifically for inspiration on it.

They did a really good job on the weapons, dual-wielding some of those late game guns was so much fun to chew through enemies without needing to reload mid-fight.

I found freezing bananas in bite-sized pieces in a little tupperware container helps slow it down a lot, and feels like a frozen treat.

Feels like the best way to play it was either phone or wiiware, each chapter on release. Lets you leisurely do the postchapter dungeons, which really highlight some of the fun gameplay.

His standard kit is just really good and hard to improve. Hovering, 8 directional aiming, and rapid fire. Vile in MHX pulls off the weapon gimmick way better with having 3 at a time you customize, each is way more limited so new ones fill more unique niches to blend.

They make him do that as his unique move in the Command Mission RPG and it’s pretty cool.

And Axl’s really fun to play in X8 even, but I think a lot of people never gave him a chance because X has armor to get and Zero is Zero, and you can only take 2. Kinda sucks.

It honestly makes the most interesting humans I’ve seen in a sci-fi setting. They’re the ones to invite everyone to live with them in peace but also the most emotionally unstable, least consistent group ever.

I think they're at their best if you treat them like a consumable. They can get you further in the game faster/easier, and usually the rewards later on are better so you can make up any investment faster too.

I like the fan theory that they saw the western fanbase repeatedly call a character in XB1 "Seven" and locked in on the idea that the west specifically wants a 7th party member.

Fantasian has a pretty good Mix in it, though that's a pretty reasonable exception given it's Sakaguchi directing a game inspired by replaying FF6.

I feel like a lot of Tidus hate is similar to Squall hate where they can't square the fact that internal monologues aren't said out loud and the character is socially aware enough to want to present an image but not internally match it 100%.

I think the main thing it has going for it is you can really easily see the skeleton of good ideas all throughout. Like they got close to an FFT Ramza/Delita split going on between Clive and Joshua and just didn't lean into it. Kept me more engaged than bored, even if not satisfied.

Apparently the PC version was region locked on Steam so that it couldn’t be bought in Japan. So they probably want to dip into that + Switch with this one, practically just a port.
