Meteorites in the Epic of Gilgamesh are described with the Akkadian word kiṣru meaning a “lump” of material — a “lump” of the sky god Anum or just “sky”.

I find the connection between sky and rock incredible. Did the authors know that flashes in the sky were rocks that sometimes landed?

Really interesting thread on palaeontology and the rise of race science in Germany
Imagine your notebook surviving for centuries to be studied by historians. This happened to transcriptions by Nicholai Miklouho-Maclay, Russian of Ukrainian Cossack descent, of a palaeontology class delivered by Ernst Haeckel (1866) This unlikely record, captures the rise of race science in Germany🧵

Yesterday was the start of UK Disability History Month - but how can we think about disabled voices in the past in a way that recognises their agency?

Our new series does just that! @beckierutherford.bsky.social introduces the idea that we can historicise disability as more than a medical identity.
Reimagining Disability
How can we reimagine disability as more than just a medical identity? This series explores disabled people’s history in relation to social, political, cultural, and economic agency.
