As much as I hate that YDFM clear-cut and flattened a large block of land -- and still hasn't built anything useful on it 5+ years later ... I do appreciate that their parking lot used light-colored pavement and includes many trees. It does not get as hot as […]

There are still some flowers blooming at Arabia Mountain nature preserve. I was happy to find an American persimmon tree in fruit, since I had been thinking of planting one in my yard. Unfortunately, the fruit is not ripe yet and was not pleasant (astringent) […]

Fediverse question: A Lemmy story just showed up under the Atlanta hashtag, but I cannot see any way to add tags to a Lemmy post. The only mention of Atlanta seems to be the community name. How does that work?

A few days ago there was a big apartment fire in Clarkston. "Fire officials say about 32 units were impacted, displacing 35 adults and 15 children." (via ANF) These are largely refugee families recently resettled in the USA.

If you can chip in, they are […]

We seem to be entering the COVID-19 summer wave. Emergency department visits have doubled over the past month (as percent of total visits). Remember that with ED visits, the most recent data reflects infections that occurred ~2 weeks ago; one week to gather the […]

I also got a striped fly of some sort, and another insect that I can't begin to categorize.

My garden had some more surprises today -- three leafhoppers, all from species I don't think I've noticed before. The biggest looks like a "blue and gold" leafhopper, but I can't find a good candidate for the other two.

My flower patch has attracted some sizable beetles. I'm not sure exactly what they are -- maybe Emerald Euphoria beetles. Anyway, I'm feeling blessed, because we all know that the Creator has an inordinate fondness for beetles.

It's frustrating when people use meetings to grandstand and speculate about topics that are only tangentially related to what they supposedly called everyone together to discuss.

It was great to see everyone who showed up at Atlanta Streets Alive! A friendly passer-by parked his dog (Sophia?) in front of our sign for a photo. She's a good dog!

Pike nursery is a good place for general gardening supplies around Atlanta. Their staff is knowledgeable and available for questions. Much better than Home Depot. And to top it off, they are employee owned […]

For comparison, here is the county-level life expectancy from 2000. It shows the same basic pattern as the data from 2019, but the top counties have increased by 6 years, while the country as a whole has increased by 3, and many places have stagnated. For […]
