Serina Riedel 🇩🇪 bronze with 6183
July 20, 2025 at 4:42 PM
Abigail Pawlett silver EU23 heptathlon with a small PB of 6320
July 20, 2025 at 4:41 PM
So this was, indeed, the plan. She could have run 6 seconds slower and still won - so 6500 was the target

There’s also the auto qualification for the World champs in Tokyo this year, 6500.

Incredibly for her talent, Vanninen has never actually scored over 6400 outdoors (although has 4900 indoors).

So 2:15.44 would give her 6500 and outright Q, and take fate out of the hands of world rankings

6563, breaking an ancient Finnish national record, and scoring the outright qualification for Tokyo - Saga Vanninen retains her EU23 title
July 20, 2025 at 4:39 PM
And Saga Vanninen 🇫🇮 did indeed hoof it - no messing around, eyeballs out to the end, 2:11.00 PB
July 20, 2025 at 4:38 PM
A Danish record is also likely on the cards, with Karla Scharfe only needing 2:23.96 (her PB is 2.22.73) to crack her own mark

Over and above the title, Vanninen has a few marks to attack if she so wishes.

2:22 would get her the Finnish record, currently 6404 set by Satu Ruotsalainen in 1991 in Tokyo.

2:22 is a bit risky with a 10 second buffer to 2:15 Pawlett, so assume it will be faster, and the record will go

Ntragkomirova’s 800m is her weakest event and has never broken 2:30. Sitting in third place only 26 points ahead of Riedel (around 2 seconds) means the German should overtake her easily for bronze.
July 20, 2025 at 1:50 PM
Pawlett should be safe for silver, a similar standard to Riedel but with the German 117 points in arrears.

However, the German is running for a medal
July 20, 2025 at 1:48 PM
So overall that leaves Vanninen with a very comfortable lead, >150 points (some 10 seconds) going into the 800m

She can’t jog round, but her new 800m speed (a tactical trade off with shot, where she already has plenty advantage) means she shouldn’t need to push her PB of 2:11 to win comfortably

Sidebar for Liana Truempi, first time over 40m in the javelin on the back of her 6.31m LJ PB earlier today 🇨🇭
July 20, 2025 at 1:07 PM
Riedel’s throws were solid (44.42 best) but not at her upper end, and so she took less out of her gap to Pawlett in second place than she might have done.
July 20, 2025 at 1:06 PM
Ntragkomirova 🇬🇷 recovered from her disappointing LJ (she was distraught) with some 48m plus throws, but 🇩🇰 Karla Scharfe shone in the penultimate event. All three of her throws were over 50m, two over her previous PB of 52.45m. Her second throw 53.38m was a Danish U23 record
July 20, 2025 at 1:05 PM
And, it turns out that her best throw is just 43.74m. She extends her lead over Pawlett (40.67m) to 151 points but with the big throws of Riedel and Ntragmirova still to come, the competition is a lot closer than many would expect.
July 20, 2025 at 9:52 AM
And now a teeny tiny plot twist.

Vanninen is throwing in Group A of the javelin, the shorter throwers, given that she has no season’s best this year.
July 20, 2025 at 9:50 AM
Serina Riedel was 288 points behind Pawlett at the end of Day 1.

She’s hacked that down to 189 points after that superb LJ, and potentially has another 100 pointsto take off that with her javelin.

Standings after 5 events
July 20, 2025 at 9:22 AM
Vanninen extends her notional 3-point lead overnight back to something significant - 92 points - with two strong events to come.

But things are getting interesting in the silver medal hunt.
July 20, 2025 at 9:19 AM
Riedel isn’t done yet - the German extends her lifetime best to 6.52m, to the long applause of the German coaching staff.

Vanninen thumps down at 6.18m in her final attempt and Pawlett fouls
July 20, 2025 at 8:53 AM
Riedel 🇩🇪 improves to 6.35m in round 2 and Pawlett 6.21, but Vanninen puts her foot down and accelerates to 6.49m - just 3cm short of her lifetime best.
July 20, 2025 at 8:23 AM
Day 2 of the EU23 championships heptathlon in Bergen, and into round one of the long jump.

Serina Riedel 🇩🇪 hits a good one straight away, 6.30m (her PB, from this year, is 6.46).

Vanninen 6.12m first attempt, Pawlett 6.07m
