2025 challenge in my family!
Memorize 3-4 vs of Ephesians per week, to finish in a year.

My husband, my parents, and 2 of the “big kids” have joined so far. Verses 1-4 this week.

I’m so excited. They love a good challenge. This is the closest thing to a family Bible study we’ve done in… too long.

Then he builds a canoe and hangs out in it!”

Most kids went back to school today. Time to walk & think & capture things.

It has been said (I read or heard)
That you melt ice by fiery word
Not even hardened wills of kings
Resist, should you turn rocks to springs
Before I think my own soul lost
Breathe words to thaw my numbing frost

My first introduction to biblical theology was a women’s study on “Covenant” by Kay Arthur. I had never before seen a theme developed through all of Scripture, fulfilled in Jesus.

Listening again, to review why God does not abandon his people.

“Noah’s flood marks a watershed.”
Vern Poythress, Biblical Typology

Deliberate pun? Does he throw these things into his lectures or sermons? And do people catch them? Curious.

My husband has to work Christmas Day. Usually this doesn’t bother me, but this year it does.
Last night my son demanded I drag my old camera out to the freezing back deck to photo the stars.
1) I love & miss photography.
2) The first exposure revealed an overwhelming number of stars we hadn’t seen

Today, Lord willing, I wrap up a set of 25 worksheets aimed at teaching kids Bible reading skills.
Lesson learned: It’s a lot easier to teach kids systematic theology concepts. And it’s a lot easier to get buy-in from teachers for sys theol activities.

Digging in to thick text is just daunting.

“It tickles my neck!!”
Why on earth my husband ordered chicks & ducklings when it’s freezing outside, I do not know. But here they are from the Post Office, so let’s hope the heat lamps work well!

Agatha Christie’s own life story colored the way I read her books—and made me like them more.

“Is he, then, an unhappy man?
Poirot said, “So unhappy that he has forgotten what happiness means. So unhappy that he does not know he is unhappy.”
The nun said softly, “Ah, a rich man.”

If you want to care for orphans—Js 1:27–education is a giant hurdle. Only 65% of foster kids in our state grad from HS. Spec. ed, tutoring, testing are huge time consumers for overwhelmed foster parents. We’re SO blessed to have an excellent school—a Christian school for

#booksky day ?
Dare I say I find much of Jane Austen ungracious & shallow? Persuasion is one of her more “mature” novels (& less popular). It’s my favorite of Austen’s books.

I’ve listened to many of these short, missionary biographies. Low-commitment books, yet perspective-altering. My favorite is Mary Slessor. Her gospel-fueled boldness in the face of violent anger is the repeat thread of her life. The gospel is powerful, even over human anger.

Me: This our sheep dog, wandered off?
Husband: Do you even know sheep dogs at all?

He’s pretty confident about the tie of a shepherd to the sheep of its pen.

Money, Possessions, & Eternity by Randy Alcorn
My husband & I took a class on financial stewardship, taught by a pastor who shortly after was dx with aggressive cancer. We miss him. Investing in eternity means investing in his destination. But I still struggle in this area.

Fascinating diagram: 4 ways the OT laws translate to NT times. Could some differences be that not everything in the OT is fulfilled yet? This matters—the idea of waiting—as people wrestle with which rites to keep as placeholders for things to come.

Of course @nancyguthrie.bsky.social is on my #booksky list! After years away from church, I started studying the Bible—in the minor prophets, where else?!! I was blown away by all that Jesus fulfilled. I wanted to write a 365 daily devotional, so others could see it.

Christopher Ash’s comm. on Job gave me permission to love Elihu. I’d felt frustrated bc it sure sounds like Elihu claims to be a God-man with news of ransom from death! But “they say” you have to lump him with the 3 bad friends. Like me, Ash changed his mind. Even Job points to Jesus!

Just finished Book 1 of City of God. Only 21 to go!!!

Husband: So, is Augustine a politician?
Me: No. But it is a political book. He’s saying if you debate whether the Christian God or pagan gods could have protected Rome’s prosperity better, you’re invested in the wrong City.

Basically, anti-CN.
