Maybe it’s me but I don’t think it should be legal for a network to call itself “news” when it’s nearly 100% propaganda.
1A allows us to lie all we want…but there have to be consequences for institutions that deliberately lie to manipulate the populace.

I don't get Medicaid.

I’m not on food stamps.

I rely on no Social Safety nets.

But I still believe in FULLY funding these programs.

Why?

Because I'm not a cruel ruthless selfish piece of shit.

“You need to model somewhere in the curriculum what it means to read a whole text in the company of an engaged community.”

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Are Books Really Disappearing From American Classrooms?
Measuring whether "whole texts" are vanishing in favor of excerpts isn't clear cut.

"What has your story as a writer been as a student?"

We're starting here to begin the upcoming school year for our ongoing reflection document—probably the most important artifact in our classroom.

Every time students write formally, we come back here.

(And by the end, it is incredible!)

Once a month I give this anonymous Google Form survey to all my classes + then turn around and share the results with them the following week

Adapted from what @jimmayers.bsky.social does in his room, having this monthly "pulse check" has been a game-changer

(Especially the debrief conversations!)

People have taken this so many ways today with their noticings and wonderings! #PoemADayJuly

For me: I am struck by the frequency of end-stops, especially with periods, throughout the poem—as if to signal that it is over even as the speaker reminisces on a last gasp of hope

"but I said, No, I’m tired of being / the one who sums things up."

This is a new one for me, and as such I'm really excited to explore today's #PoemADayJuly: "The Day of Our Divorce Hearing" by Ruth Lepson

What do you notice? 👀
What do you wonder? 🤔

"God sent an angel. One of his least qualified, though."

Quite a stretch of poems for #PoemADayJuly — and today's is no different, with "I’m not a religious person but" by Chen Chen

A poem is a conversation between the text and the reader.

Let's listen.

So here's my 🧵 of working through this masterpiece of a poem that without question resonated in different ways this time—and made me wish, in some ways, that I had a time machine back to when I brought it into the classroom earlier in my career.

Not to avoid it. To do it better.

Here's why

(📝/1)
"Let it be that great strong land of love / Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme" (7-8)

I would guess that most of us have read this poem. Some of us (*raises hand*) have brought it into our classrooms.

"Let America Be America Again" by Langston Hughes

Let's read it again. #PoemADayJuly
