I love genealogy, plants, beach walks and life. I'm a big believer in happiness research and other science-backed ways of making life better.
It's a beautiful day for making the Christmas pudding. Make a wish. 😊

The old window is channelling the sun nicely, this morning.

We had an absolute ball at the immersive sound, vision & animation art event today. My birthday present from one of my sons & his family. In the abstract hall which immediately put me in mind of the late 1960's, my soon to be six granddaughter was moved to interpretive dance. 🥰 Surprising enough 1/2

I'm now back home after a fun week in Corfu. The occasion was a family wedding on my husband's side. Corfu was chosen as it's part way between Shanghai (where the bride's parents live) and the UK. It proved a lovely spot and many happy memories were made. 😊

I'd always wondered about Scottish ethnicity on my Ancestry DNA test. Now it's gone & I have Northern Wales & North West England, which ties in my research (for this branch I've used DNA cousins for the first time). Denmark has largely gone. I would love more clarity on my NW Europe heritage.

How's this for a collection of family stats? Decades of family members' heights pencilled on the wall of a dressing room in the house at Antony, Cornwall (National Trust). The volunteer kindly opened a special, narrow cupboard door in the painted panelling, to show this to me. What a treasure! 😊

No wonder I've been wandering through the London parishes in vain! I should have been looking in a seemingly completely unconnected place 243 miles away. 🥴 Now, where are the rest of you hiding?!

Among the many interesting sights at the Bishop's Palace in Well, Somerset, today: Costumes from TV series of Wolf Hall and Coronation artefacts.

We arrived at the Bishop's Palace and Gardens at Wells cathedral, at just the moment the swans were fed.

Here's Rob modelling the clapper gate at St Lawrence's church, Berkshire. It's been renovated, but the design remains. The horizontal struts have hammer ends which clatter satisfyingly as you press them down and step over them. I wonder how those in long or tight skirts would have managed?

Having a wonderful few days with house guests. 🥰🥰🥰

Thank you 2 x great aunt Caroline, for moving with your husband and young family to a US mid west town with a distinctive name, a small population and a Wikipedia page all of its own. 😊

I had a lovely time on my birthday trip to Hestercombe House and Garden today. The photographs were really lovely and seemed to show a positive relationship between staff and owners of the past. Here's Miss Elizabeth Mary Robinson with her 70th birthday cake & a fine bouquet. She was a lady's maid.

Rainy day, time for a rummage. I just came across this early draft of my first article for my local newspaper. It was just after Who Do You Think You Are? had started on BBC TV, giving me an opportunity to introduce myself as someone with local food in my hinterland. It's fun to revisit, but it's...

FABULOUS tour of Britannia Royal Naval College yesterday! Our guide was excellent, covering a variety of aspects of place, people & traditions. Highly recommended for anyone curious to see a military officer training college on a working day. I particularly enjoyed the mention of that Devon pirate.

An exciting morning. Rob and I are on an anniversary trip to Dartmouth. This morning we have a tour of Britannia Royal Naval College. Here's a view of the town in the distance with Kingswear in the foreground, beneath yesterday's clouds.

On our way home after a family party, we stopped at Athelhampton House in Dorset. A very enjoyable visit, lovely gardens. And please admire this armoire, made for storing manorial documents and such like, around 1325.

Here's a folklore -ish thought from my own childhood, VJ. Whenever we saw wild arum seedbeds we would call them "snakes' food". I think it was a reminder not to eat them, in the days when children had more freedom to wander than sense! I thought of you when I saw these yesterday.

As Rob points out, we didn't do selfies thirty-nine years ago. I suspect we might still have hired a wedding photographer, though. 😁👰🏻💍
