I recently discovered, too, having bought a new Samsung TV, that to stay logged in to the BBC iPlayer the global “Allow tracking” option must be activated, meaning tracking is available for anyone, not just the BBC. If it’s off, I have to log in to iPlayer after each time the TV’s turned off 😡

Having read the article, I’m reminded about the weirdness of being asked for your email address in shops. It’s presented as a benefit (they will email you a receipt rather than give you a paper one) but I don’t want to give my data to a company when I only went in to buy a pair of socks.

Yes! The post office does that here, too. And last week in an electronics shop which is part of a large chain I was asked for my date of birth; I queried it, and they were automatically signing me up for a points system I knew nothing about and didn't want.
