I think “combinatorics” is a legitimate way of creating game content, even when it’s a little obvious that it is being done. Sometimes it yields total masterpieces, and sometimes it does not (dont feel like creating trouble with examples, sorry!)

Saberhagen names his characters Nigel and Rolf and so on and now I do too. Help!

The obvious one I was missing here, which I’ve caught up on since this post, is “A Voyage to Arcturus”, which was fantastic

That would have been preferable!

well done - I had to go the whole B. A. Baracus pre-flight preparation 0_0

I definitely have far and away more opportunity to play meatspace B/X than I have personal time to do so, and I don’t live in the US either!

Gygax wrote of this too in the 1e DMG

Cheers! There’s a couple of authors I haven’t sampled in the list of authors so might be worth getting

Is it a straight anthology or does it have essays, etc?

Oh totally! Never parting with mine!

I have a couple of sets of this that came in paperback bundles I bought for other things… still kinda want to buy the fancy black cover version coming out next year

... and off-hand weapon use too!
December 19, 2024 at 4:21 AM
It does but only for fighters starting at 20th level (!!) (Expert book pg 8)

I confess I always work top-down and just mind-map if I'm totally stuck for time
December 19, 2024 at 3:51 AM
As the DM I find it extremely spooky when hastily and utterly arbitrarily hand-drawn building dimensions on a city map just happen to match the almost exact dimensions of a real world building I'm ripping off

Sorry, pulling an electronics term ("floorplan") confusingly into talking about maps. I meant "the predetermined space in which a gridmap must fit"... "footprint" perhaps
December 19, 2024 at 2:24 AM
point crawl dungeons are basically mind maps so easy to continue exploding until you run out of prep time. gridmaps are self-limiting, well, at least for me, because the floorplan is usually already decided through an earlier area map

... or I am not a client or server, I suppose. Generally, it's the use of "enumerated types" which feel way too much like my day job :)

I much prefer the procedural design of say AD&D (in this case this happens) rather than the taxonomic/"semantic tag" type design of 5e (here is a list of "conditions" all with these "names", or here is a list of things your character can do all with these "names") precisely because I am not an API

I remove the restrictions but swords above +3 are non-magical in a non-Fighter’s hand

I read the room. Some players don’t feel ok with rolled HP and dead at 0. Some do! Some won’t load up with henchmen/hirelings, some will. I’ll just flick the switch from hard mode to easy mode if I’m sensing upset

Single column A5 is easier to self-bind with a home laser printer, easier to read on a phone or kindle, and prints 2-up or 4-up just fine. I don’t really care about fancy books… “information wants to be free”

For my online games I can’t be bothered with dice rollers and I’m happy for players to just roll a real die and tell everyone the result. So we are all essentially behind screens and it’s the players who don’t trust other players which I find a bit irksome and I wish they’d trust/let go/relax
