Is it just everyone I know or have all DMs of a certain age included in one of their fantasy games a Dalek, an Aliens xenomorph, or a submachine gun?

Don't get drawn into it OSR, I believe in you!

Usual cyclical work crunch has halted gaming efforts massively. Looking forward to the new year! Big list of action items from my last game session to flesh out. Hope my players are still even interested in D&D by then 😅

After reading @shirtlessgoblin.bsky.social’s Dungeon mag post I just wanted to write a love letter to the AD&D adventure “Of Kings Unknown” in Dungeon 25 by Randy Maxwell…

Left: 1980 PHB, Centre: WOTC 2012 remaster, Right: DriveThru POD of 2012 remaster, “standard color” option.

Will be taking the POD copy to our Christmas game for maximum spilled beer compatibility.

My fingers are 100x more happy with the POD paper texture compared to the glossy 2012 book!

OMG, this is amazing. I feel like I've wasted my life writing C all day now.

I've been mulling over my recent FB ban. Things went instantly bad when I said that I don't volunteer queer creators as counterexamples in OSR/anti-OSR arguments due to risk. This a.m. I saw a guy who posted anti-trans stuff to a BECMI group has a profile full of ex-stalking posts. Enough said :-/

I don’t think I’ve ever been banned by a Facebook group before tonight, so I feel a bit yuck, but, the act of banning sort of proved my point decisively, so yay? (Don’t bother clicking like on this, the whole thing was a hot mess.)

Do I sense an OSR renaissance* here on BSky? I don't know if it's due to filters or what but it seems like there is still a kernel of solidarity and a bunch of pushback against negative stereotypes

Marching slowly towards my 50s and just repurchased PoD AD&D manuals so I don’t dump a beer on my old ones by accident. Wish I could send a message to my teenage self to keep a brief log of all games played on the endpapers. Maybe it’s still worth starting now.

Thanks for the input - have you run 1:1 time before and are these your findings or is this all gedankenexperiment? Nevertheless I'm thinking 1:1 may now not be a good pivot (cheers) but potentially for a third mooncrawl I'm mulling over to complete the campaign trilogy

Anyone know what the commonly used term is for when time between sessions in real life is amount of time that passes in-game? (I'd love to ask questions about people's experiences but using the correct nomenclature is handy) #osr

My #appendixn for my OSE D&D #OSR campaign "Silver Swords"/"Bronze Blades" has wrapped up for now. Game has been on a 2 mo. hiatus but unmothballing soon. I’m working on a “Players Guide” but here’s the page that I used to launch BB: www.deathanddrek.com/posts/planet...
Introduction to Planet Crasis: Bronze Blades
A guide to the Planet Crasis: Bronze Blades campaign.

I've been reading the Marvel UK run (300+ issues) of The Transformers. We had a small selection as kids. It reprinted US material and original UK material which was better. Also Lew Stringer cartoons in the back! :) Issue 100 might've planted the seed for an adolescent nightmare I found v exciting

A perennial meme #OSR #BOSR

Why do I play OSR D&D-likes? Because of my career. I'm a software developer/electronics engineer (sorta) who got into that line because I loved monkey-patching stuff together for fun. Sounds like OSR ...

Today’s #appendixn for my OSE D&D #OSR campaign "Silver Swords"/"Bronze Blades" is a grab bag of “weird planets with weird landscapes”. These relate to the third, nascent arm of the sister campaigns called “Occult Oculus” which is Planet Crasis’ moon… but TBH haven’t had time to develop it

Today’s #appendixn for my OSE D&D #OSR campaign "Silver Swords"/"Bronze Blades" is a bit of a spoiler

I saw some chat about #OSR race-as-class being icky somewhere today. There's merit to the claim, similarly, with ability scores being fit on a normal curve and then certain trad fantasy races having their curve offset. How to address? This is my unoriginal standard operating procedure

Today’s #appendixn for my OSE D&D #OSR campaign "Silver Swords"/"Bronze Blades" is the 80s British fantasy scene: 2000 AD, Michael Moorcock, and anti-Thatcher elements in GW products (#BOSR, why not?)

The villains in my chaos campaign (BB) are merely brutal, those in my law campaign (SS) are worse

Today’s #appendixn for my OSE D&D #OSR campaign "Silver Swords"/"Bronze Blades" is a twofer since the two are linked. Cosmological alignment meets the laws of physics in the hermetic principle, “as above, so below”.

Alignment = physics comes from Poul Anderson’s “Three Hearts and Three Lions”…

It’s getting towards the end of the year so, in terms of procuring a 2025 diary/planner, I’m thinking it’s a good time to switch my games from zero time passage between sessions to real time passage. It’ll vastly simplify record keeping.

Today's #appendixn for my OSE D&D #OSR campaign "Silver Swords"/"Bronze Blades" are the “Empire of the East” and “Book of Swords” stories by Fred Saberhagen. Featuring a world where magic, gods and demons now exist due to side effects of a technology used to suppress nuclear explosions…

Lots of relatable OSR gymnastics today but all - please do not be too hard on yourselves. Everyone has a secret. What you do know about people is potentially less terrible than what you don't know about people. (This message is sponsored by every fallen progressive.)

Today's #appendixn for my OSE D&D #OSR campaign "Silver Swords"/"Bronze Blades" are the collected Morgaine Cycle stories by C. J. Cherryh. Grim and desperate, science and star-gates meet swords and sorcery.
