One of my first jobs paid me with an actual handwritten cheque each fortnight. I had to sheepishly ask the office manager what to do with it, then was horrified to learn that I had inherited a chore each fortnight to cash it and get my money.

...people can and should decide themselves on how to describe what they do. This might be different to what their employers 'brand' them ( often arbitrary). And in any case, many of us end up taking on tasks that don't neatly fit into any definition - and this can be satisfying or necessary.

It sounds like a scientist of some sort. I think the specific job title would depend on the employer's industry and domain. Ive found in different industries, specific titles can be rich with meaning and be very different to equivalent activities in other fields.
