I first heard this from Stuart Kauffman. The example he gave was with proteins. To paraphrase: if proteins are long chains of 20 different kinds of amino acids, and the typical length of a protein is 300 amino acids, then more than 20 to the power of 300 proteins can theoretically be made...?!!
