this is also fucking insane stuff from Paula Butterly. against whom have "we" been fighting this "huge battle in the last number of years to protect our rural life"? who caused generational rural depopulation thanks to chronic underinvestment and brutal austerity?

as long as we're talking about press standards and the public interest, it'd be great if the Press Council got rid of its utterly absurd rule that people can only make complaints about member publications if they are "personally affected by the article"

in an Irish context, the broadcasting code explicitly states fairness does not imply a need to create "artificial balance", that you don't have to give an "equal hearing" to all sides of all issues, and that giving an "equal hearing" does not make you compliant with fairness principles.

for anyone interested in learning more about the man, I highly recommend reading this US diplomatic cable on him, released under FOI but partially redacted. I would love to know what word(s) were between "Ganley" and "denied these conspiracy theories"

Mattie McGrath now says supporting Martin and his govt was a mistake. interestingly, in the interview, he says he was promised access to ministers, but when Fran Curry asks if he got the access, Mattie doesn't answer, he just says the govt's own TDs say they don't get access

as much as I clown on Dan O'Brien for being a heartless, brainless, unscrupulous ghoul manufacturing consent for Ireland to deepen its entanglements with foreign imperialism, I am genuinely shocked he would sink so low as to support nuclear proliferation

I highly recommend Slap the Monster on Page One (1972) and Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1970) as a double feature, a pair of insightful satirical political thrillers from the Years of Lead, starring history's most handsome man Gian María Volonté

Noel Thomas told Conor Gallagher he doesn't really now what the "IRB" are about, but that "what they're talking about is wonderful"

they talked about setting up their own courts and government at a meeting where Noel Thomas spoke

they've now deleted the tweet in which they denounced him as a Trinity College intellectual, which I have to assume they knew about him when he wrote "The Machinic Enslavement of Programmatic Nihilism" to provide theoretical justification for their then-impending split from PBP
