When I was a teen, my friends family had one and it meant their basement kitchen was always toasty warm without any need to run heating - a great place to dry out after a long and usually wet/snowy walk home from school in winter (this was 1980s Buxton!)

That’s pretty well where I’m at. Plus I do like a bit of historical ceremonial stuff.

NB coring the apples without cutting them is easiest with a special gadget but can be done with the round type of potato peeler or a slim knife if need be.

You can stuff the centre wirh dried fruit or mincemeat if you like. It’s a very flexible recipe!

Core Bramley apples (other types of apples won’t explode the same way) and score a line round the circumference to allow the apple to expand. Top with something to sweeten (maple syrup, honey, sugar) and a bit of water and bake uncovered in oven (200 or thereabouts) till it looks like this.

Yep. See picture. Makes it easier for readers to find the right reading for any given Sunday without having to search through a Bible (this book has all Sunday readings for all 3 years. Smaller versions do exist with smaller print and thinner pages)
