Good thread on the need to separate corporate myths and fictional stories about AI in education from the messy and often problematic realities of how AI actually works in classrooms. We need clarity on claims vs. cost and labor, who benefits, and who gets to decide.
Can I quietly ask we stop talking about what "AI" *could* do in education and identify instead what's actually happening with AI in education? I'll start...

You can never bend the knee enough to appease an authoritarian bully.

This is a devastating blow to academic freedom & freedom of speech at Columbia.

Never in the history of this nation has there been an administration so intent on the utter destruction of higher education as we know it.

Not surprising of course. So much to unpack here. But I am not at all convinced that teachers are 'in the driver's seat', as posted by OpenAI, especially AI-critical folks who will feel additional external pressure to use corporate AI tools for accelerated or 'optimized' course design.

Trump announced its AI Action plan for American AI dominance. What we really need is a People's AI Action plan to ensure Trump + Silicon Valley don't weaponize AI against working people, exacerbate the climate crisis and fortify the surveillance state.

Proud to have signed on and endorsed this call
The White House released its AI Action plan this morning. We know where it came from: straight from Big Tech. But there’s another path available to us: we and over 100 other orgs called for a People’s AI Action Plan. Read it here: peoplesaiaction.com

Solidarity with every NEH employee who is part of the Reduction in Force, and whose separation from the agency is being enacted today.
We guess that Monday miracle for #NEH employees won't be happening after all. Tomorrow over 100 staff and public servants of the #humanities will be terminated from their positions. It's heartbreaking and so completely unnecessary.
We know we’ve been more quiet on here lately. We’re hoping for a Monday miracle today, friends. We know so many of you are as well (for various reasons).

Although NEH has ceased to exist in its former glory for the past 59 days, tomorrow it becomes very real. (1/2)

I’ve noticed an uptick in dismissals of the concerns of teachers about AI. Some say that it’s *their* job to find a way to evaluate work that AI can’t replicate. I would just ask that you talk to real teachers and really listen. I’d also suggest reading a bit about writing and the brain.
