The US government has been turned over to a group of extraordinarily ignorant people, and they are working to destroy science in this country. Cutting over half the NSF budget would save < 0.1% of the federal budget, but do incalculable harm. Simply heartbreaking.

White House budget proposal could shatter the National Science Foundation
“This kind of cut would kill American science and boost China.”…

how useful is a typical book on statistical physics?

well, this one lacks an index entry for "thermal expansion coefficient" but has an entry for "waiting for godot, as markov chain"

What’s happening to offshore wind under Trump?

I ran the numbers.

9 projects are untouched by exec order, enough to power 5 million homes on schedule.

Also:
✅ NJ and RI governors react
✅ We made a map of projects and their status under Trump

'Scare tactics' and uncertainty: What Trump’s offshore wind order…
Trump pressed the pause button on offshore wind. Projects that have secured their permits may be unscathed, but those in earlier stages face a tough road.

Physics does not care about our politics, and ultimately the world will continue to warm until we get global emissions of CO2 to (net) zero.

For those of you following the muon g-2, here's a recent update of the short and intermediate window quantities from the Fermilab-HPQCD-MILC collaboration. We hope to have long-distance results in the relatively near term.

Hadronic vacuum polarization for the muon $g-2$ from lattice QCD: Complete short and intermediate windows
We present complete results for the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ$ in the short- and intermediate-distance window regions, which account fo...
