Also, if I understand correctly, Bregman asserts that many elites are working meaningless jobs, and some of them are doing so primarily because they don't recognize the alternative opportunities that are available to them, and at some points in the past things were better.

Hello!

A recent Lever article describes a movement in Colorado and Montana to put reasonable and effective limits on corporate influence. I think a policy like this is as important as any other policy Washington state could adopt. Please read the article and please develop similar legislation.

Here is another take on AI and water, etc. that seems great to me. I'm a Hank fan. I linked to the middle of the video but I think the whole thing is worth listening to.

"only biased choice" I meant to say

And when I said "Global AI is on track to use 2 trillion gallons in the next couple years" I meant 2 trillion *per year*, starting in 2027.

I honestly don't know how good these sources are. My only biased that I'm aware of was to not read an article about beef water that looked like it was written by the beef industry based on the website name: literally "cattle industry something something".

And it takes around 2000 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef:

Here’s how much water it takes to make a serving of beef – and why where it comes from is so important

And the part of the Forbes article that matters is:

"Already AI's projected water usage could hit 6.6 billion m³ by 2027, signaling a need to tackle its water footprint."

Here is more but still doesn't cover all my earlier numbers:

"The world produced 60.57 million metric tons of beef in 2020"

Here is evidence for part of my earlier numbers, but this doesn't support all the numbers I gave:

AI Is Accelerating the Loss of Our Scarcest Natural Resource: Water
With the rise of generative AI, companies have significantly raised their water usage, sparking concerns about the sustainability of such practices.

AI is also ending careers and, while some are profiting massively, many of us will be left with no job (or no good job) and no assistance with re-training if public policy doesn't radically change.

I've heard greenhouse gas emissions from each are also a huge problem but I don't know any numbers yet, or remember any from the past.
November 22, 2025 at 4:39 AM
My point is *not* that AI water usage is not a problem. I think it is. Even though it's a lot smaller than beef, it's still a lot of water. Beef is just so bad it's not difficult to be better.
