A movie that takes place where you’re from
Still from the film ‘Last Night’, 1998 Canadian apocalyptic black comedy-drama film directed by Don McKellar. Sandra Oh’s character is walking down the middle of an empty downtown street, except for an abandoned TTC streetcar with its doors open on the left side of the scene, and an abandoned bicycle lying on the street on the right side, white smoke hanging in the air getting thicker in the distance. Sandra is carrying bags in both hands, walking towards camera in heels, red dress and a dark jacket. McKellar wrote the screenplay about how ordinary people would react to an imminent global catastrophic event. Set in Toronto, Ontario, the film was made and released when many were concerned about the Year 2000 problem. 22 years later, I would be walking down the centre of empty King Street remembering this scene and movie. We’re still in a pandemic but you’d never know it. Forever 2019.

I found myself across Ontario Place the other day for the first time in 2 years & was shocked bc I had forgotten it was all gone 😭 My mouth literally dropped & felt my gut drop. This used to be walking trails & thriving habitats to many species. It’s going to be all glass, concrete & parking garage

You can barely see Budweiser Stage at the edge of the left side, then a dirt hill with 4 or 5 bare trees behind the hill, the original Ontario Place architecture of the floating pods and the sphere hidden behind them. And more dirt and mound of dirt all the way to the right edge. There used to be trees and bushes and wooden silos and other funpark architecture where nothing but dirt is now. A blue sky and dramatic white clouds float over the desolate scene. Closer up shot looking straight ahead across Lakeshore Blvd, on the left is the edge of the floating architectural pods and across the shot is the completely razed park land and mound of dirt all the way to the right edge. Dramatic white clouds in the background, Lakeshore is empty of vehicles as I snap this. Looking south west to the end of Ontario Place, no trees where they used to be, nothing but razed land jutting out of the lake. Small trees line Lakeshore Blvd, silhouetted against the lake, blue sky and dramatic clouds, backlit by the setting sun. It looks desolate and wrong. Like, something wrong happened here.

Gutted to learn this morning of the passing of disability justice activist Alice Wong @sfdirewolf.bsky.social 😥 I admire her writing & fierceness in advocating for herself & others for protections in hospital in the early days of the pandemic, how I came to know of her. What a force! RIP Alice 💜

Just one more reason to clean the air everywhere indoors, like we clean the water. Why wouldn’t we use the tools our leaders keep saying we have to live with Covid, flu etc? HEPA air filtration, Far UVC. It’s everyone’s right to have a safe work environment, to not be harmed by the air at work. 😷

A large bronze sculpture by Henry Moore named ‘Large Two Forms’ 1966-1969, at about 7 feet tall, they look like abstract blobs that when looked at from different perspectives walking around the sculptures, look like they could fit together. They’re dusted in snow and sitting on a circular tiled brick area in the grass that’s completely covered in snow that’s part of Grange Park behind the AGO and OCAD University.
