Some of the latest drydock photos from KIDD’s Facebook page. She’s looking real good and is slated to go back into the water on November 11th, Veterans Day. The return to Baton Rouge still won’t happen until the river rises in the spring though. #NavalHistory

Dorado is guessed to be resting in an area of ocean at least 10,000 feet deep. Searching that depth is no easy task, nor is it cheap. The Project needs your help to afford it.

The PBM released 3 Mk 47 depth charges and 1 Mk 4 Mod 4 100 lb bomb. The bomb and first depth charge failed to detonate but the second two depth charges found their mark.

The PBM crew detected an unknown surface contact and proceeded to investigate. At a range of 8 nm, the bright moonlight allowed them to make out the silhouette of a small vessel. They moved to attach with the moon directly behind their target.

Unfortunately, the crew of 290-P-9, the PBM Mariner flying out of Guantanamo Bay on an air coverage mission for a convoy on its way to Trinidad, had received an incorrect description of the restricted transit zone.

Unfortunately, Dorado’s first voyage would be her last and she would never reach the Pacific.

It is believed Dorado was sunk by a PBM-3S Mariner patrol plane in a friendly fire incident somewhere in the Caribbean.

She was commissioned in August 28, 1943 with LTCDR Earle Schneider in command. After her shakedown cruise proved the boat and her crew ready for war, she set sail for the Pacific.

Because her service life was so short, there aren’t many photos of Dorado. What exist are largely of her construction and fitting out, including Time Life’s feature on women in the submarine building workforce.

USS Dorado (SS-248) was a Gato class submarine built by Electric Boat Company and launched on May 23, 1943.

The USS Dorado Project is in need of your help to acquire funding so they can begin the search to locate the missing submarine and honor her crew. Donate today! #NavalHistory
