If, like me, you use Metro-North or LIRR semi-frequently, but not enough to qualify for the new pay-as-you-go discount, you might want to consider getting a 10-trip pack before they’re eliminated. By my math, the fare for my regular Poughkeepsie-NYC trip goes up **23.5%** without the 10-trip option.

Also hiked through Sloan Gorge Preserve nearby, which had such an excellent self-guided tour highlighting the Catskills’ geological history. This little canyon was carved by glacier-fed whitewater rapids at the end of the last Ice Age.
