Growing hybrid wine grapes in SE Arizona. I'm here to share my learning journey in winemaking and grapevine tissue culture, as well as share stories and wildlife photos from the vineyard.

Final tote. Single node cuttings of wild grapevines with a few graft attempts - Shiraz on this set. Little bit every day...

Time to attempt propagation on the grafted cuttings I've been working on this week.

Canada's retaliatory tariffs will hit the US wine industry harder than beer & spirits. Not only is the value of US wine exports to Canada higher than that of beer & spirits combined, wine industry exports are also more dependent on Canada: 34% of U.S wine exports go to Canada (beer 11%, spirits 10%)

Our neighbor (generously!) came over today with his tractor to help us do a shallow rip on the new field. We're ripping perpendicular to the flow of rainwater as an attempt to improve infiltration.

What size wineries are represented in these data? Also curious what are the production volumes of the smallest and largest wineries in the sample? @wineecon.bsky.social
Important to know but little known.
Starting in 2021, the producer price index for U.S. wineries has surged, while the consumer wine price index has grown only moderately—leaving behind a large and growing gap.

I decided to clean and organize my seed storage this afternoon - great feeling to have this done. Everything is nicely packed away and I have a good idea of what's here. I just ordered quite a few seeds, too. Really looking forward to spring.

Winds today in Pearce, Arizona
January 26, 2025 at 12:26 AM
Dry and windy day at the farm. We received a red flag fire warning this morning in our area so I have been clearing up some brush around the house. I feel a huge relief that the vineyard fence is finally complete and am glad to have the flexibility now to catch up on this landscaping work.

This is what happens when the tissue culture media finally dries up.. This wild vitis arizonica grapevine was initiated in May 2024. Maybe I'll leave it for another year just for fun.

Biggest challenge so far in our first year of small scale winemaking: Barrel headspace but no wine from last year for topping. The solution here was to rack the remaining wine out into SS tanks and carboys. I would prefer to leave it in the barrel, but it isn't worth the risk of oxidation IMO.
