It can take emotional fortitude, but I think any marginalized spec fic writer can enjoy* the DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars" w/o knowing ANYTHING abt star trek. if you find yourself in a surplus of spoons & curious abt Star Trek DS9, that's the episode I rec.
